Joseph (Joe) Wesley Houchins, 66, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on October 20, 2017, in his family home. He was born in Knoxville to Douglas and Mary (Blevins) Houchins. He graduated from Doyle High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from East Tennessee State University. He worked with his brother for Houchins Construction for many years building homes for friends and family, and for many other home owners. Joe is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Denise Houchins; sisters Nancy Daves (Jerry), Jane Cox (Cas), brother Fred Houchins (Susan); nieces Laura Daves Heinz (Mark), Hester Daves Beecher (Bill), and Sara Houchins and nephew Jesse Houchins (Tara Minx). Joe loved to fish and hunt, and he had many good friends who shared time with him in the early morning hours on the water or in the woods. He was a master craftsman, talented artist, and potter, and continued his love for making pottery until only a few months ago. He was a quiet and kind man who will be dearly missed by his wife, his family and his many friends. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held on November 4, 2017 at 11:00 am at New Prospect Presbyterian Church, 4920 Prospect Road, Knoxville, with Reverend Denny Ford presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cades Cove Preservation Fund, P.O. Box 1660, Kodak, TN 37664.

Denise, Nancy, Jane, Freddie and families, I can only imagine the hurt that you are experiencing. May GOD assuage the grief from Joe's passing, and imprint positive memories of his life. What a Great guy! He taught me to fish, shoot a gun, frog-gig, put up hay, raise rabbits, ice skate, and milk a cow. I considered him my best friend before the 1st grade and after at Anderson when we moved to the "Loop". This passing has really hurt. I will never forget Joe and the experiences I had on the farm. Joe was simply a great guy. We grew up together going to Anderson School and Doyle High School. My brothers and I would join Joe, Freddie and several other guys for some great football in the field below Joe's house. And I still remember getting to drink the fresh milk from their farm when I would spend the night with Joe. One of my favorite memories was playing football with Joe our senior year at Doyle. He loved football!! Joe and I were the two defensive ends and I could always tell where Joe was at the end of a play. He would always be at the bottom of the pile of players, laughing!! Joe was a kind, down-to-earth, happy friend. I'm sure he grew into a wonderful man. God bless him and his family!!

Had many great times with Joe and Ricky Ford. I never could get Joe to understand how my sister got the nickname of B.I. Joe will be missed because he was one of the finest men I knew.
