From Dana and Family

Dear Joyce
Joe and I became immediate friends and shared a comon bond through our log homes. Few would under-stand this although I'm sure you do. It was an unspoken bond and one which I will always treasure. We look forward to seeing you at Edgemount and sharing these memories with you.

Dear Joyce,

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's death. He was a wonderful person and I will miss him. I remember singing for him at your home in Utah and telling him about my opera studies at the University of Michigan. Never was there a better listener or friend. I enjoyed reading his obituary and learning more about him. He lead a wonderful and amazing life I am am glad that I knew him. I send you both my love and sympathy.

Love,
Beth Arnold Mitchell

Joyce, Brig and Sarah...you know how saddened we are, and only sorry we couldn't have attended the service...our love

I was a graduate student at the University of Michigan and was one of the researchers involved in reading and coding the variables for Joe’s monumental Western North American Indians. I derived my dissertation from that research but later went on to do field work among the Navajo, Ute, and many groups in Alaska and eastern...

Humanity has lost one of its most passionate advocates. Those of us lucky enough lost a great friend. Joe is irreplaceable. I trust Joyce and family can take comfort in all the lives Joe touched in profound and meaningful ways. My family grieves with you for your loss.

The world will be much emptier without Joe in it. Gosh, we'll miss you so much, Pal.
