Retired Army Lt.Col. Joseph B. Kelly, 82, of Carlisle, died on a sunny Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, in the Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle. He was born July 31, 1923, in Fort Smith, Ark., and was a son of the late John and Mary (Farrell) Kelly. He grew up...

The Wilbur Stone (fellow 3rd Floor resident) family extends their deepest sympathy to the family of Joe Kelly. The two of them could have had a wonderful time discussing world travels through the military if only the ravages of their diseases would have allowed that to happen. We're sorry we weren't able to know Mr. Kelly as he was but we did enjoy knowing him as he was when we met him on the third floor as our two families shared the struggles of caregiving. We enjoyed the twinkle in his...

It saddened me to read of the passing of Professor Joe Kelly. Like so many others... I was scared to death of Professor "Machine Gun" Kelly each day I attended his Contracts class. It didn't help my fears when I met a student attending Temple University's Law School... and had them ask me about Professor Joe Kelly... "that scary contracts professor". He was a legend even among students at OTHER law schools!!! Only during my later years at Dickinson did I come to know the REAL Joe Kelly......

It was with great sadness that I learned of Professor Kelly's death. I will never forget my Contracts class with him--it truly reminded me of scenes from "The Paper Chase." Professor Kelly was very kind to me my first year at DSL, and because I studied at a library carrell near the elevator where he exited the building, he would often stop and say hello to me and ask me how I was doing. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to Professor Kelly's family.

Les and I have so many wonderful memories of Joe. We were members of the 71st PA thanks to Joe. I can't even begin to tell anyone how magical nights spent around the campfire with Joe were. He called our sons, Matthew (23) and Travis (21) "the lads" and entertained them with magic tricks and ghost stories on many nights.
He was especially revered and admired by the Law School's foreign students. He would always take the students on a "Civil War weekend", put them in uniform,...

It was with great sadness that I learned of Professor Kelly's passing. It is impossible to overemphasize the profound effect he had on my life as a law student and as a lawyer. How could one forget that the answer to a contracts question that had drawn you into the library for an entire weekend was to "look to the forest not to the trees" . The man was a classic and a giant. My sincere sympathies to his family.

Joe was a great man always interesting to be with and fun to be around.
I will never forget how my daughters always called him thier "Magic Uncle" and I will always remember how he and his borther "Deke" would play Bud Witmeyer like a violin.
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you.

Professor Kelly was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all of the Dickinson Law School community and the students he taught. Sincerest condolences.

A saint walked among us. When John effected a career switch and became Joe Kelly's nominal but very junior colleague at The Dickinson School of Law, Joe proved a fine mentor given to the understated anecdote as a teaching mode. When Joan essayed law studies quite confident that the gentle man students dubbed "Machine Gun Kelly" would not intimidate her in the all important first-year Contracts class, she was proven wrong! Joe always minimized the many assists he afforded John and was quite...
