Obituary

Joseph P. Kingrey Jr., 85, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2008. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and a sister. Mr. Kingrey retired from ARA Services, Inc. in 1987 as President of the western sector. Prior to that he was President and CEO of Macke, Inc. in Roanoke. He served his country faithfully in the United States Marine Corps and served seven years as an administrative manager in the missile and research development center for TRW. Mr. Kingrey was a devoted Catholic and 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He was a prominent figure in the business and political communities in Washington, D.C. Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Katherine Abshire Kingrey; daughters, Kelly Rappleyea, of Durham, N.C., and Suzanne Domagala, of Chester, Md.; son, Joseph Peter Kingrey III, of Palm Coast, Fla.; grandchildren, Jake Rappleyea, Jennifer Domagala and Zachary Domagala; and half sister, Ruth Robertson. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Joseph Lehman officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2008, at Oakey's South Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, Office of Development, 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla. 33136-1494. I was happy to have met Joseph Kingrey several times especially when he was living in Severna Park, Maryland. He was my mother's older brother.

I met Mr. Kingrey one time and one time only but I have remembered his kindness to this day. I was 17 years old, alone and on my first airplane flight. It so happened he was seated next to me. It was April, 1970. Our plane was late leaving Roanoke meaning I was going to miss my Washington connection for Rhode Island. I knew nothing about making arrangements in Washington for another flight, etc. He told me not to worry he would make sure I got on a flight and assured me I would indeed...
