I grew up in Broadus, graduating 1960 and came to Missoula in 63'. A friend of mine and longer time friend of Joe's, Ray Thompson of Alberton got in a little trouble and spent 6 months at State School in Miles City where Joe was coaching in 1959. I was on the Broadus Hawk team during those years. Ray lived in Missoula and visited Joe a lot at SKC when going up to Nine Pipes all the time. I have warm memories of Joe McDonald that trace themselves back 60 years to a moment when he was coaching the Broncs basketball team in Hamilton. At that same moment, my father was teaching and coaching in Libby and, for the first time, they coached basketball teams that competed against each other in the same conference.
