Joseph McNerney, 97, of Kansas City, MO passed away September 17, 2006 at St. Joseph Health Center. Visitation will be held from 6:30-8:30pm Monday, September 18, 2006 at Muehlebach Funeral Home, 6800 Troost Ave., Kansas City, MO where there will be a Prayer services at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers kindly make memorial contributions to the Joe McNerney Scholarship Fund, c/o UMKC Pharmacy Foundation, 101 Katz Pharmacy Bldg., 5005 Rockhill Rd., Kansas City, MO 64110-2499. Joe was born July 10, 1909 in Sparks, OK to Joseph and Margaret McNerney. He grew up working in his father's drug store in Sparks, OK. He moved to Kansas City where he worked in several pharmacies. In the 1940's he went to work as a Sales Representative for Sharp & Dohme (later Merck Sharp & Dohme) retiring in 1974. Joe was a veteran of the US Army, serving in the 358th Infantry of the 90th Division during WWII. He served as a medic in the European Theater and was on Utah Beach Normandy on D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge. Joseph was decorated with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Marian, Catherine and Margaret McNerney. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Martha Jean McNerney; children, Denise McNerney of Leawood, KS, Joseph F. McNerney of Kansas City, MO, Mike McNerney of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; a brother John McNerney; grandchildren, Belinda McNerney, Lisa Crook and David Crook; a great grandchild, Mia Marin. Joe had a love for music, loved to sing, was a great story teller and rascal. "Groove", as he was known by many, was loved and will be missed by all.
