NORTH ATTLEBORO - Joseph R. Menyo died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in Providence at age 86. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Irving) Menyo with whom he recently celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary.
Born March 14, 1924 in Elco, PA, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Slevka) Menyo.
Mr. Menyo has been a resident of North Attleboro for over 30 years. He was raised and lived many years in Elco and later the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston for over 25 years.
He retired from West Roxbury Crushed Stone at age 58 and had previously worked at Pittsburg Steel, Corning Glass and as a coal miner in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Menyo served the US Navy in Pacific theater during World War II aboard the USS Canberra, a Baltimore Class cruiser, until she was torpedoed during the Aerial Battle of Taiwan-Okinawa in 1943.
Mr. Menyo belonged to the VFW and the American Legion and was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and vegetable gardening.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six sons and their spouses, Joseph Menyo of Pawtucket, Paul and Linda Menyo of Norwood, Robert and Sandra Menyo of Plainville, Thomas Menyo of North Attleboro, David and Linda Menyo of West Roxbury and Ronnie and Mary Menyo of North Attleboro; 12 grandchildren, Paul Menyo, Jr., Michael Menyo, Maria Garlick, Leah Milne, Brian Menyo, Christina Menyo, David Scott Menyo, Jennifer Menyo, Ashley Badertscher, Kaitlyn Menyo, Brittany Menyo and Joseph Menyo; and six great-grandchildren. He was also the beloved father-in-law of the late Carol Menyo.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday afternoon, January 2, 2011 from 2-6 p.m. in the Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove Street, North Attleboro. A funeral will be held from the funeral home on Monday, January 3 at 9 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 14 Park Street, North Attleboro at 10 o'clock. Burial to follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Attleboro Falls.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Attleboro Veteran's Office, 43 South Washington Street, North Attleboro, MA 02760.
