Joe and I met on a tour led him in Guatemala and elsewhere. He was indeed a man of intelligence and wonder and we shared several moments of discovery and recollection of things passed as I was a Ranger and did the Colorado River several times as well as being a river guide and doing the San Juan River over 60 x. I met Joe at Sul Ross in Alpine when we were both Freshmen and members of the Sul Ross Marching/Concert Band. I played French Horn while Joe played trumpet. Also had the pleasure of sharing Spanish courses there too. He was a very quiet person until you got to know him better and then he could really stand out among the crowd. Joe was a quiet, warm, mature, intelligent, college sophmore when I first met him in Alpine, Texas in 1973. We became friends during my freshman year at SRSU along with my fellow "Army Brat" childhood friend, Robert Carignan. Joe, Robert and I immediately gravitated to each other; the three of us struck up a wonderful friendship.
