I met Joe at the Cox Family Reunion in Galax, VA. He grew up with my father and shared some of his memories of that time with me. He was so kind and considerate. I am so sad to hear he has passed. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

I met Joe Payne in 1985 when I was getting my Master's in Math Education at the U of M. He was a friend to my parents and I had always heard wonderful things about him. He provided guidance, kindness, and always humor during my time back in Ann Arbor and 27 years later, as I am still teaching math, I think of him often. He was and always will be a role model for me.

Joe Payne was an outstanding human being. We missed him when he moved from Ann Arbor, but we were able to see him whenever he came for a visit. We will miss him more now, and the memories of a gentleman and a scholar will remain with us forever. Our condolences to his fine family.

My husband Russ and I have fond memories of Joe and Ruth when Russ was Counselor for Rotary scholars in Ann Arbr, Michigan. We attended get togethers for the young folks and with great delight remember riding in their extraordinary car, I believe it was a Checker, and it was huge. We had such fun together. It was a long time ago but still very nice memories. Our best wishes to the family, it is sad to think such a special gentleman has left this world.

Joe and I spent many hours together driving to off-campus locations (especially Flint and Saginaw) teaching courses for the UM School of Education extension program.
