Rigby Harting and Hagan Funeral Home - Media Obituary

Joseph Newton Pew, Jr. of Media, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 9, 2024. For those that knew him it is his hope you remember his kind words, humor, and love of family. He considered his life a blessing. Joe was happily married for 67 years to the love of his life Anita Cutler Pew. They had five children, Linda Cherashore (Rick), Ann Duffy, Rob Pew (Stephanie), Carol Farina and Bill Pew. The untimely death of his son, Rob, was a sadness that was ever present. He cherished his grandchildren, Kyle Wesley (Michelle), Erin Duffy (Zach) Omcikus, Christine Wesley, Ryan Duffy, Abbie Farina, Dalton Pew, Grace Farina, Bryce Pew, AJ Farina, and Will Pew along with his precious great grandchildren, Ariana, Jordan & Hank.

Joe was born at the Media Hospital on May 9, 1933, to Joseph Newton Pew, Sr. & Florence Paul Pew. He grew up in Wallingford Pennsylvania, attended the School in Rose Valley, Friends Central and Episcopal Academy, then studied economics at Lafayette College as a proud member of DKE where he developed lifelong friendships. He started his banking career at Upper Darby National Bank, holding many roles at several banking institutions in Delaware County. He then became a marketing consultant, serving on the boards of Southeast National and Fidelity Bank.

While visiting his father at Lankenau Hospital he met a pretty nurse trainee. Their first date was the movie, “Love is a Many Splendored Thing.” Dating a nurse was not without its challenges and she asked him to take her away from it all. And he did! Being married to Anita was his greatest joy. They travelled to Bermuda for their honeymoon and looked forward to their many winter travels to warm and sunny islands when the kids were young. He also enjoyed trips to Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks; a trip to the Galapagos was one his favorites.

He spent many summers down the shore by the bay on Long Beach Island NJ with his family sailing, swimming, water skiing and clamming. Among other hobbies, he had a lifelong love of golf and enjoyed playing at Springhaven, Rolling Green, Grand Harbor (Vero Beach) and Hershey’s Mill, even shot his age at 80. He was also a longtime member of Corinthian Yacht Club where he sailed as a youth.

He served his community in many ways, even becoming a firefighter at one point. Anita was not keen when the alarm went off in the middle of the night. He was an Elder at Wallingford Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. He also sang in the Christmas choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He served as president of the Chester Jaycees, president and chairman of the Delaware County Chamber of Commerce, was a director at Glen Mills Schools, United Way, Delaware County Community Foundation and Tyler Arboretum. An encounter during a Bible Study turned into a 30 plus year association with City Team Ministries where he chaired the board for over 10 years and worked with Chester’s neediest residents. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to City Team in Chester PA.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 16 @ 12 noon followed by a celebration of life service at 1 pm, Wallingford Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Brookhaven Road, Wallingford PA.

Joe was so kind and instrumental to the number of lives transformed at CityTeam. He made such an impact during his time on this earth and I am so appreciative of the wisdom that he shared with me when I began my role. I will be praying for Anita and family.

He was a great friend of our family and his joy for life will never be forgotten to me.
