Read MoreI remember living in Heritage Estates in Vero Beach in the late 1960s and my brother Ray and I lived next door to the Pitmans. Joe taught us how to jerk press at the YMCA in Vero and he was such an inspiration for us young kids. He took a personal interest in us. Clearly a respected role model for young people - we can use a few more Joe Pitmans in today's world. RIP, Coach Pitman.

Joe Pitman was a mentor, a coach and a very dear friend. He was one of the most important people in my life as a young man. As a world champion weightlifter in 1950 he set many American records and represented our country honorably. Rest in Peace my good friend, you have earned it.
