Apr 9, 1972 – Feb 5, 2022 (Age 49)
Joseph A. “Joe” Raines, age 49 of Elwood, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Ascension - St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel after a short battle with double pneumonia from Covid-19. He was born April 9, 1972 in Anderson, the son of James A. “Jimmy” and Cecilia M. (Heagy) Raines. Joe was a 1990 graduate of Elwood Community High School. He worked in the grocery business most of his working life. Joe was a produce manager for O’Malia’s and Marsh Supermarkets for 28 years and later worked for Kroger for 5 years. Most recently, he worked in production at Red Gold in Elwood. Joe married Monica A. Kelly on June 21, 2014 and they shared over 7 years of marriage together.
Joe was an avid bowler most of his life. He enjoyed bowling on Monday night leagues at Lucky Strike Lanes in Elwood for many years, and passed down the love of bowling to his sons. He enjoyed bluegrass, Elvis, and country music; and loved nothing more than a good joke. Joe was known as a “gentle giant” for his kind and relaxed personality, and he had a great sense of humor. He was formerly a Boy Scout leader while his kids were growing up and was avid Star Wars fan. Joe especially enjoyed watching football and watching all types of movies. He truly enjoyed spending time with his family, and he will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend to many.
Joe’s family includes his wife, Monica Raines of Elwood; two sons, Joseph A. “Drew” Raines II of Goshen and Alexander M. “Alex” Raines of Elwood; 4 siblings, Margaret “Peggy” Buckner of Anderson, Kim (Duane) Alsip of Anderson, Candy (Rick) Raines-Petrie of Avon, and Beth (Reid) Myers of Westfield; mother-in-law, Minda Kelly of Zionsville; sister-in-law, Erica (Trevor) Davis and family of Fishers; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Allen Raines; brother-in-law, Roy Buckner; and father-in-law, Albert W. Kelly.
A funeral service celebrating Joe’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home with Pastor Rodney Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 to 7 pm on Thursday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Health precautions and face coverings are requested by the family for the safety of all who attend. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Catalyst Youth Center in Elwood or the Autism Foundation through the funeral home. I had the privilege of working with Joe these past few years at Kroger. He was a man with a big heart and solid center. Just knowing him has made me better, even though I think he never realized it. Blessings to you, his family and friends.

I had the pleasure of working with Joe at O'Malia's for 8 years as his assistant produce manager. He always went above and beyond for his customers and was one of the hardest working people I have ever encountered. He was kind to his coworkers and gave them the benefit of the doubt, always ready to lend an ear, crack a joke or talk local sports. I always enjoyed his tales from the bowling alley and when he'd come to work after a particularly successful evening at Lucky's. Our favorite...

Deepest sympathies to my Indiana families. Joe truly was a man who enjoyed laughing, making other laugh and smile. Joe had a pure heart. I never heard him complain! Joe will always be remembered for his great wit and jokes. God bless his family with the greatest of memories.

So very sorry to hear of Joe’s passing. I knew him from his years at O’Malia’s/Marsh and then followed him to Kroger. I will always remember his singing while he worked. Was alway a pleasure to run into him at the produce department.

Joe’s smile and excellent hugs will be missed. He was the master of his job and knew more about produce than seems possible. He was kind and welcoming in whatever store he worked. He was loved by his customers and staff. Wishing all of you healing from this shock, peace from the memories, and joy in always holding Joe/dad in your hearts.
