McConaghy Funeral Home, Ltd. - Ardmore Obituary

On June 22, 2025, the muggy, oppressive, unforgivable day after a driver killed Joe Riga during a bike race, the front door to his little brick house on Haverford Avenue never stayed shut.

A parade of people with red and puffy eyes, most toting cavernous Carlino’s bags, streamed into...

Not sure what to say?

I would be remiss not to comment on the truly tragic passing of a fellow Double Eagle. What an amazing life! I never had the pleasure of meeting Joseph (Hebrew for he shall add). Therefore, my grief is vicarious. I will bet he pretty much took over any courtroom, and boardroom or any room he entered as a lawyer.

Dear dear friend Colleen, I just today heard about Joe and as tears roll down my face I want to say how very very sorry I am to hear this news. I loved you both. We all had so much fun, including Ellen. If you ever want to call to talk please call me or text me and let me know how you are 856-305-1127. I´m so sad for you and your children. Love you...Jean Hall

Colleen, my thoughts and prayers are with you, your children and entire family at this very sad time. May beautiful memories bring you comfort and peace.

Joseph in the little time I got to know him I cannot not think of anyone as kind, loving and caring as he was. Me and my mom admired talking to him. He always cared for us and checked up on how we were feeling. I will always have him in mind as to my mother. He will live on through conversations and moments we had with him. My family sends love towards this devastating loss.

Dear Family:
Please know my thoughts are with you all at this sad time.

Joe welcomed me into Old Man Hoops almost a decade ago. As he did everyone who ever showed up at the St. Margaret’s game on a Friday night. Be it a graduating 8th grader looking for something to do as he strolled by the open doors or the new guy who just moved to town. He was a constant presence. He knew what it meant to everyone to forget about the world for awhile and just play. Over time, I became a regular and when Joe walked into the gym, I knew a real game was about to happen. Some...

Every interaction with Joe was a positive one. Smart, savvy and (sometimes) a bit sarcastic. He was indeed the glue. The voice of logic and reason. We always relied on him for his two cents and it always came from the heart. His wisdom has pulled me out of the weeds on more than one occasion. He’s a treasure that has no measure. My heart and prayers are with all who loved him most. ❤

I always called Joe Joey! We were childhood friends! We played football all kinds of sports with the neighborhood kids in Blasdell NY! I remember tent camping in the Rigas back yard when a storm rolled in! Too funny! Mrs. Riga called us in the house. We were all but 12-11 years old. Joey was my best friend as kids. I love you Joey! My love to all and prayers! Mom has you now! God Bless everyone!
