Joseph S. "Spruce" Riggsbee

Obituary

RIGGSBEE, Joseph S. "Spruce", 91, of Mineral, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Riggsbee, and many other loving family and friends. Mr. Riggsbee served his country honorably in Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland in the U.S. Army during WWII. Spruce retired as a Battalion Chief with the Richmond Fire Department after 35 years of service. He was also a Free Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Richmond for many years. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 6, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Homes' Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, where services will be held Monday, July 7, at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be at Westhampton Cemetery.

Please accept our deepest sympathies in the lost of Chief Joe. He was a good Husband and Firefighter as well as friend. Our hearts are heavy too. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, having served the United States in the Army during World War 2 and then later becoming a member of the Fire Department.

Having worked for him, I always looked up to him as a good leader and Chief Officer.
