RILEY MD, JOSEPH L. All his life he wanted nothing more than to be a Doctor. His early memories are of the crisp white coats of the residents who came from Cook County Hospital to see him when he was so ill; of the fresh, clean smell of the antiseptic, the mystery...

Not sure what to say?

Dear Jean, Joey, Jimmy & Jan- I was so sad to learn only today of Dr. Riley's passing. It has been 42 years since I've seen any of you but I remember well. Dr. Riley delivered two of my sons before he left Charlotte, one in 1964 and one in 1966. I have vivid memories of cooking supper for Dad while Mom was down at the Dr.'s office working; of babysitting Joey, Jimmy & Jan (yes, you will ALWAYS be Joey & Jimmy to me), probably the most vivid was the day I wrapped your Cadillac around the...

It has been a blessing/honor to me to have known Dr.Riley and to have helped take care of him as his (h.h.a)i will always remember his kindness, friendliness, and his smile. he always had a smile in his eyes.

The Rileys and my family (the Matthews) used to live in Charlotte, Michigan. "Uncle Joe" and my dad were both doctors there. The Erhards and Browns were family friends, also. Later, the Rileys moved. When I was going to be entering the 9th grade, the Rileys kindly let me stay with them. Jan was a senior, and I was a freshman at Forest Lake Academy. I guess it was that school year that I wrote the following poem for "Uncle Joe":

There is a man...

Dr. Riley was a "Founding Father" at Florida Hospital. His guiding hand and gentle spirit helped to shape the department of anesthesia, and influence many, many others.

You were a funny, sweet, kind and caring man. I am thankful to have known you. God Bless your soul!

"Prince Joe" -- that's the way I addressed him, and that's the way I will always remember him, for Joe Riley was a PRINCE among men! Warm, gracious, engaging equally well with ALL who had the good pleasure to cross his path -- whether fellow-physicians, or the night team of environmental workers -- "Prince Joe met all with a word of good cheer and encouragement.

I wholly expect to see Joe again in the Kingdom of God, and with that brilliant twinkle in his eyes and 'Poppy Chulo"...

Joe was a very kind and cheerful neighbor and now a guardian angel providing comfort to those that need.

I feel very blessed to have known Grandoc and to have been part of the family. All of my memories of Grandoc are of complete love, kindness and happiness -- and lots of great jokes. I will miss Grandoc but will have these memories forever.
Love,
Jason
