Not sure what to say?

My name is Carl Lee and I played for coach Silver or as we affectionately called him behind his back of course was "Joe Gold". I loved coach Silver he taught me a lot about sports and life. he led by example. He would always tell me..." Carl ..if you score you might win...but if he never scores...you can never lose" and I never forgot that as a player....always hustle and play defense. I am deeply touched by his passing I will always cherish my memories of him.

Mr. Silver will be missed. He was my basketball coach in 86 and 87. Hillside pride........ Everybody remembers he kept the gym like a palace. Very caring person. Prays to the family.

While most remember Mr. Silver as a great basketball coach, I remember him as the best baseball coach I ever had. He didn't just teach me about baseball, Coach taught me life lessons that still remain with me 44 years later. He had that much of an effect on the lives of those he touched. I'll remember him always, in his baseball uniform, inspiring young lives. My gratitude goes out to his family for sharing this great man with all of us. My thoughts & prayers are with them, especially his...

During a few years, when I was the Principal at Hillside High School, back in the early 80's, I had the privilege and pleasure of working with your wonderful father. He was a truly special person, who guided his student-athletes by the very virtues of integrity, decency, and dignity, by which he lived his own life. Our culture needs more Joe Silver's for his passing is a sad loss in this time of so many who only consider themselves and their own needs. Rich Sternberg

He was a great Head Counselor at Camp Algonquin

One of the greatest defensive minds in the country, Joe Silver was recruited by Hubie Brown to coach in the NBA while in his 80's. Joe did not have the nationally known name of many of his disciples and contemporaries but they knew who he was.

Hillside was always a team that other schools hated to play because under Silver,Hillside would play stifling defense and a disciplined offense.

Hopefully the Christmas tournament that bears his name will continue for many years.

Great memories of Joe. He got me involved in the state basketball association and more specifically the North-South All Star game. He honestly cared about the kids and high school basketball and he worked tirelessly to give them the recognition they deserved. Joe never got the credit for all of the behind the scenes work he did. It was a pleasure to have known him. Rest in Peace.

This year, Hillside HS Athletic Director, Ralph Rotando honored Mr. Silver at the Joe Silver Holiday Basketball Tournament as the longest running high school basketball tournament in New Jersey. It's good to know someone at HHS still keeps Coach Silver's legacy alive. Rest in peace.

I was in Mr. Silver's American History class in 1954 (junior year). He was a wonderful teacher, and I thought somewhat shy. I feel lucky to have had him as a teacher. Rest well, job well done.
