Read MoreJoe was a good man. I had a chance to cover him when he was township supervisor and I was a reporter for the Gazette. He was always honest and helpful. He cared a great deal for his township. I am sorry to hear of his passing but he left a legacy to remember.

I had the privilege to work with Joe in the late 1970s. I was the Director of Kalamazoo METRO. Joe wanted to bring bus service to Comstock which was outside of the City which operated the bus system at that time. Joe was skilled at intergovernmental relations and the service which still operates today was begun. Joe was a fantastic individual to work with and I value the time that I spent with him. My sincere condolences to the VanBruggen family.
