Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel Obituary

The Zanetti family sorrowfully announces the unexpected passing of Joseph Francis Zanetti, affectionately known as Papa, on Monday, October 25, 2021, at the age of 90.

Joe was a first generation Italian American who was born to the late George B. and Rosa Lee Rabb Zanetti, he was raised in Pensacola, Florida on the water front, in the area now known as the Sander’s Beach Area. In addition to his parents Joe is preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Lind Van Steenburgen, Georgia “Jean” Aasand and Anna Lee Kohl.

At a very young age he became a shrimp boat fisherman, following in the footsteps of his father.  Joe eventually left the local waterfront to proudly serve in the United States Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict.

After serving in the Navy, he returned home to Pensacola and resumed life as a fisherman until deciding to join the Pensacola Fire Department.

He faithfully served the fire department for many years and eventually retired there as Captain.

After retirement from the fire department he once again continued his love of being a fisherman, which he did until he was forced to retire due to injury.  Joe enjoyed spending his retirement with his family and friends, especially his nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish his memory include, his devoted wife, Betty Jo Zanetti; three children, Val (Peggy) Zanetti, Troy (Maureen) Zanetti and Jeannie (Steve) Martin, as well as many other family members, including several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 9:00am until 10:30am on Friday, October 29, 2021 at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, Pensacola Florida. A graveside service will follow to honor the life of Joseph Francis Zanetti at 11:00am at Barrancas National Cemetery, with Fr.  John Licari, Celebrant.  Military honors will be accorded by the United States Navy.  Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel, 2276 Airport Blvd, Pensacola, FL 325004 by 10:00am on Friday to go together in procession to the cemetery.

Not sure what to say?

Grandpa JoJo was part of our family for so many years. He and my father, Rabbit, were the best of friends since forever. Rest assured my Dad will be at the pearly gates waiting on him. May God Bless the Zanetti family.

Offering our sincere condolences to the family during this time of deep sorrow. Commendations on your faithful and honorable service in the US Navy and the Fire Department. May God be with him and the family during this most difficult time.

We were honored to know Joe through our close friends, Diane and Glen Early. When we were around him we were so moved by his spirited conversations, especially about his shrimping and firefighter “escapades.” We always enjoyed being around him (and Betty, of course). Rest in peace “Uncle” Joe, you will be so missed. We are so sorry for your loss, Betty and family. God bless. ❤

Rest in Peace Captain Zanetti. Joe was my Captain in the Fire Department. He was a close friend of my Dad, Sam and my Uncle Bernie. He was a dear friend of mine as well. I will miss him deeply. He was a a skilled firefighter who taught me many things that I would later use when I became a Captain. He was the best, the very best.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I have such fond memories of Mr. Joe. I remember one Christmas when he was Santa Claus and came to our house on the fire truckI thought he was the real thing since he knew my name and had a little gift for me. He was always so kind and I will never forget him. May God bless and comfort all of you.

I know Mr. Zanetti from the Credit Union. He had a one of a kind voice. He always spoke of his wife and made me laugh every conversation. One thing I could always count on it a heartfelt ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!! I am going to miss him so much. Praying for you Mrs. Betty and Family

There are many things I would like to say about Joe,he was the best friend I had in Pensacola. If he borrowed a tool,it came back in better shape than you loaned it to him.He always had a story to tell, and poor Betty was always blamed for things she didn't even know about.Joe never worried and always made you laugh. He was one of a kind and I'm proud to say he and Betty will always be remembered by me.

I only knew Mr Zanetti while working at his credit union and it was mainly by phone conversation. He never failed to bring a smile to my face and made me laugh so often. It was such a pleasure to have these conversations with him. I know he will be missed by so many. RIP Mr. Zanetti.
