Josephine Cacciola

Groton - Josephine Cacciola, 96, of Groton, passed away at her home, surrounded by her loving family Friday, Dec. 19, 2025.

She was born in Altolia Messina, Sicily, Italy the daughter of Frank and Josephine Interdonnato Urso. She was predeceased by her husband Peter Cacciola; and her son Frank Cacciola.

Josephine had worked as a seamstress in the garment industry in New York City for many years and then became a homemaker taking care of her children, as well as her nieces and nephew. She shared her love for cooking with her grandchildren and taught them everything she knew about cooking. Josephine always had a smile on her face and brought so much joy to everyone she met.

She is survived by her daughters, Rosemary Cacciola and Anna (Richard) Lawton, both of Groton; her sister Mary Giannetto and brother-in-law Santi of Millsboro, Del.; three grandchildren, Christina, Nicole and Peter Lawton; her nephew Joseph (Diane) Giannetto of Millsboro, Del.; her niece AnnMarie Giannetto of Brooklyn, N.Y. and her niece Marylou (Patrick) Doonan of Brooklyn, N.Y. She is also survived by her great-nephews, Michael, Daniel and James Giannetto of Brooklyn, N.Y.; as well as her great-nieces. Rhianna Giannetto and Katherine Doonan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at Sacred Heart Church, 50 Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Visiting hour will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames Street.
