A thousand times we needed you
A thousand times we cried
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died
A heart of gold stopped beating
two twinkling eyes closed to rest
God broke our hearts to prove he only took the best
never a day goes by that you're not in our heart and soul.

Our family would like to express our deepest sympathy for the loss of your precious son and brother, Joshua. We hope you find comfort in knowing that he touched the lives of all who knew him and will never be forgotten.

Joshua was a classmate and friend to our daughter, Chrissy. We have fond memories and remember Joshua and your family from the time that they attended school at Mackey. Joshua was always so joyful and happy and very polite. He encouraged Chrissy along because she was more timid and soft spoken. God blessed both of our families with loving angels that saw nothing but the goodness in others. Though it has been ten years since Chrissy left us, I still feel her presence.

I hope your family finds comfort in knowing that though Joshua's no longer physically with us, he will live on in the minds and hearts of all who knew him.

Our love and prayers will be with you.

I was saddened when I heard about Josh, but he left many happy memories with everyone he came in contact with. I feel very privileged to have known him for so many years at the Reddix Center and years before that. He was such a joy to have in our Scout Troop and would "help" us keep the other Scouts "in line".

May heart goes out to each of you at this time. Please find comfort in the many memories he left with you and the many lives he touched.

Wow! As Rolph and I read all the special words for Joshua, we thought we knew how really blessed we were to have Josh in our lives, but even more now...our heart sings with joy at all the lives he really did touch...from his cousins in Texas and all the way to Georgia...his Aunts and Uncles in Texas and Georgia, his teachers, and his friends. To my sister Barbara, my brother-in-law, Britt, and my special nephew, Jacob and his wife Jen, we are here for you and proud to be a part of the Dunn family and Josh's life...he is in Heaven looking down on all of us and instead of saying, "Are you okay?" (we know he always asked us that question out of concern for us)...He is saying, "You are okay!" You are with Pa (Joe Herley) and Nanny (Eva Grace Dunn), so we know you are ok too!

Josh,
I know your playing your guitar, laughing and having a wonderful time in heaven. I still have your and Jacobs Christmas card on our fridge and it makes me smile everytime I walk by. You always brought a laugh to everyones mouth and tear of joy in their eye with your warm heart and sense of humor. Each year, we donate to the Georgia Special Olympics in your name and this past year, Chatam had the opportunity to be a part of the opening and closing ceremonies through her volunteer service with the Miss Dacula Pageant and sign autographs and she donated her award on your behalf in December. I never thought about sharing that with you, but I wish I had and now this seems to be the time.
I will never forget how you made me smile and laugh, how you loved to sing and play your guitar. What most know is your love of family and how much a part of ours you are, though we didnt see each other as much. I wish I could be there.
God bless you Josh

MY TRIBUTE TO JOSHUA WARREN DUNN
BY BECKY DUNN LUMMUS (JOSH’S AUNT IN GEORGIA)

ONE EVENING A FEW MONTHS AGO, I WAS SURFING THE WEB LOOKING FOR CROCHET PATTERNS. ONE SITE LED TO ANOTHER AND I ENDED UP ON A WEBSITE FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS. THEY HAD A LINK FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE SCARVES FOR THE ATHLETES, COACHES, VOLUNTERS, ETC. THIS SEEMED LIKE SOMETHING THAT I WOULD ENJOY DOING. EACH YEAR THEY HAVE CERTAIN COLORS THAT THEY USE. THE COLORS WEREN’T GOING TO BE ANNOUNCED UNTIL APRIL, SO I KEPT THE PROJECT IN THE BACK OF MY MIND AND CROCHETED OTHER STUFF.

FROM THE FIRST TIME I READ ABOUT THE SCARF PROJECT, I KNEW THAT I WAS GOING TO MAKE ONE AND SEND IT TO JOSH AS A SURPRISE. IT SEEMED LIKE I REMEMBERED HIM PARTICIPATING IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN TEXAS AT SOME POINT IN TIME.

ONE DAY WHILE I WAS LOOKING FOR PATTERNS AGAIN, I CLICKED BACK ON THE WEBSITE FOR THE SCARF PROJECT. THIS TIME THEY HAD THE COLORS AND GUIDELINES POSTED. I PRINTED OUT THE INFO AND A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER I BOUGHT SOME YARN AND STARTED MY FIRST SCARF, CHERRY RED AND SOFT NAVY BLUE. I USED A SIMPLE PATTERN, BUT I THOUGHT IT LOOKED NEAT. ON, OR AROUND MAY 25, I PRINTED OUT THE INFORMATION FOR THE GEORGIA SPECIAL OLYMPICS. MY THOUGHT WAS TO SEND A FEW SCARVES THERE. I FINISHED THE FIRST SCARF OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND STARTED A SECOND ONE IN A DIFFERENT PATTERN. AS YOU KNOW, JOSHUA PASSED AWAY BEFORE I COULD SEND HIM HIS SCARF. I WAS PLANNING ON SENDING IT WHEN I SENT THE OTHER ONES TO ATLANTA.

AFTER HEARING THE NEWS OF JOSHUA’S DEATH, I DEBATED ON WHETHER OR NOT I EVEN WANTED TO DO ANY MORE SCARVES. AFTERALL, THE POINT WAS TO DO IT IN HONOR OF HIM. AFTER MUCH THOUGHT AND PRAYER, I MADE MY DECISION. I AM STILL GOING TO MAKE SCARVES FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS, BUT INSTEAD OF BEING IN HONOR OF JOSH, THEY WILL BE IN MEMORY OF HIM. THAT FIRST SCARF THAT I MADE I AM GIVING TO HIS MOTHER AND FATHER, BARBARA AND BRITT DUNN. I AM NOT GOING TO MAKE ANOTHER ONE IN THAT PATTERN. THAT ONE IS ONE OF A KIND, JUST LIKE JOSHUA. INSTEAD OF MAKING JUST A FEW SCARVES AND SENDING THEM TO GEORGIA, I AM MAKING 34, ONE FOR EACH YEAR THAT WE WERE BLESSED TO HAVE HIM IN OUR LIVES, AND I’M NO LONGER SENDING THEM TO THE GEORGIA GAMES, BUT TO THE TEXAS SPECIAL OLYMPICS. THAT IS WHERE HE LIVED AND PARTICIPATED IN THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS.

I HOPE THAT THE SCARVES I MAKE AND SEND TO THE TEXAS ATHLETES WILL MAKE THEM FEEL AS LOVED AND SPECIAL AS JOSHUA WAS LOVED AND SPECIAL.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
JOSHUA WARREN DUNN

God gave Josh some mountins to climb in his life but also gave him some special gifts. My time with him was always a pleasure and his honest and open approach to life made him someone that everyone wanted to be with. I know the Dunn family is proud of what Josh accomplished in his life but they need to be equally proud of the loving support they gave him.

Barbara, Britt, and Jacob - I was so very sad when I opened my email and saw the note about Joshua. I am in West Virginia with my family because my father is quite ill so I will not be able to make it to the service but please know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Josh's picture is on the wall in my office along with his pals from Rudder, Marshall and Reddix so I saw it every day - and it always brought a smile to my face because I would always remember some "Joshua story" - there were so many cute, funny, and endearing things he would say. I always laugh when I remember him telling me to sit down and not bowl because I was embarrassing him! (He was right, I am a terrible bowler!) Every day when we did our language and communication activity, I looked forward to Josh's turn because first of all he had the best sequential memory of anyone I've ever known and was always so entertaining in telling us all about life in the Dunn house (I'm sure we knew things you probably would have preferred we didn't because he never left out any details!) One of the sweetest memories I have is of his final transition meeting when he thanked all of his teachers for loving him and thanked you all for being such great parents and told you all that he was all grown up now and you had to let him go and "be a man". I have had many students over the last 32 years, but very few made going to work every day the absolute joy that Joshua made it for me. What a difficult time this must be for you all. I wish you comfort and peace in knowing that Joshua is surely with his Grandpa. I will cherish every "Joshua memory" and smile every time I see his picture on my wall. Love to you all - "Miss T"

Dear Josh,

We missed you so much when you moved to Texas, and now it seems we must say good-bye again. But we hold the memories of you in our hearts forever. Your ever-present sweet smile, your laughter, your singing. We never spoke on the phone that you didn't ask about everybody, and I DO mean EVERYBODY! One by one, name by name ... oh how I'll miss your love and concern for your Georgia family. I guess my first, and most favorite memory will always be hearing you sing "What A Day That Will Be." From the time you could barely talk, you were singing that song. That song has come to be known as "Josh's Song." If I might, may a sing just a bit of it ... "What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see, and I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace, when He takes me by the hand, and leads me to that promised land, what a day, glorious day, that will be." My dear Joshua, that glorious day is now your's. Live forever now with Jesus, Nanny & Grandpa.
