Martha and Sandy, I remember your Mom as always smiling. She always looked for and found the good in people. She was a wonderful woman.

Dear Family,
I wanted to let you know how sweet and kind a person I found Joy to be.
My mother, Dorothy Smith, was at Bethany from 2001 - 2004 when she passed away.
Joy was always looking out for every patient. One day I heard her refuse to take a patient to the dining room until they were changed. Joy respected each and every one of them and insisted they all be treated with dignity. It was so inspiring to see and hear her in action. I thought so much of her, and always let her know we needed more people like her in the world, and how much I appreciated her.
My Mother was at death's door for about 10 days. The family tried to have someone with her as much as possible. One evening I decided to attend my granddaughter's softball game. I told the nurses I was going, and to call if anything seemed to be happening. The game ended and my granddaughter begged me to go to the ice cream stand with them after the game. I hadn't heard from Bethany, but I was still worried about my Mom. I headed toward Bethany, and as I got about half way, I called on my cell phone. One of the nurses said she was very bad. I said I'd be there in 10 minutes. They said Joy was sitting with her. She was off work, but stayed to sit with Mom!
The nurses told Mom I was on my way, and she held on until I got there. Probably with kindness and encouragement from Joy.
Days later I went to Bethany to see and talk with people who had been especially kind to my Mother, especially Joy. She gave me an all white angel she had made out of a hankie. It still hangs in a bedroom in my home, and I think of Mom AND Joy every time I look at it. It always makes me smile and feel peaceful.
Joy told me she was not with her son when he passed, and it bothered her so much she was always grateful to sit with people near death's door. I've always felt I wouldn't have gotten to see Mom before she passed if Joy had not sat with her until I got there. That's what my heart tells me.
On behalf of my daughter, Kelly, my grandchildren, Carly and Joshua, I sincerely
hope all of you were aware you had an angel in your midst.
I'm sure God is blessing her now, and may God bless all of you.
