Joy Batchelor Phillips, of Birmingham, passed away Friday, July 12, 2019, at the age of 84. She graduated from Ensley High School in 1953. She worked for Alagasco for 42 years, retiring as Executive Secretary to the Vice President of Marketing. Joy was a faithful member of Metropolitan Church of God. She is preceded in death by her parents Dena and Virgil Batchelor and sister, Doris Batchelor. She is survived by her husband and caregiver, John R. Phillips; children, Joseph V. Ross of St. Petersburg, FL, Dr. John R. Phillips (Kate); grandchildren, Robert and Madeline Phillips; sisters, Kay Gray and Diane Painter; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1-2, Friday, July 19, 2019, at Currie-Jefferson Funeral Home, Hwy 150 in Hoover. Funeral will follow at 2:00 in the chapel, Pastor Harold Kelly officiating. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial Gardens, South. The family would like to thank UAB staff, especially Dr. Emmy Bell, NPT Jane Davis and Dr. James Williams for the care, friendship, and love that they displayed in caring for Joy. May God bless them. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to your favorite charity, Metro Church of God, or UAB Kidney Transplant Center.

I worked at Alagasco with Joy for many years. I have many fond memories of those times. We also shared the same birthday. I'll always remember her on my birthday.
