JOYCE BUTLER Obituary

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - Joyce Anne Butler died on Monday, March 30, 2015 while in the Midwest Hospice Suite at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, following an extended illness due to acute adrenal carcinoma. Joyce was born at Loretto Hospital, Chicago on September 6, 1953, the sixth child to Judge Joseph and Mary Butler of West Jackson Blvd. in Chicago. She attended Resurrection Catholic Parish and School, and then St. Edna's Parish, Arlington Heights and Sacred Heart of Mary High School, Rolling Meadows. She attended College of Santa Fe, Harper College, receiving a undergraduate degree and a master degree in clinical social work from the Jane Adams School of Social Work at UIC. She worked at several restaurants in the northwest suburbs during her schooling including Marshall Fields at Woodfield. Joyce worked as an EAP downtown and enjoyed the vibrancy of the city. She attended ISPP in the Loop and received a doctor of psychology degree. She worked at the DuPage County Health Department as a clinical director and then the manager of the Transitional Services Center in Wheaton. She maintained a private practice in clinical social work in Des Plaines and then in Palatine. Her vibrancy, laughter and concern for the individual were a large influence in the lives of her nieces and nephews over several generations. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Judge Joseph and Mary Butler, her uncles Richard Sullivan and Fr. Otis Sullivan, and Tom Lyden, her sister Joan Knes and nephew Patrick Cragg. She is survived by her husband, M. Brent Gustafson of Arlington Heights, a maternal aunt Helen (nee Sullivan) Lyden, sisters Janis (Bill) Hayden, Jane McGovern, and Jaye (John) Bullaro, a brother Joseph (Nora) Butler and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved Theo, her French bulldog, a constant comfort and joy in her life. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 17 at All Saints Lutheran Church, 630 S. Quentin Rd., Palatine, IL 60067 with visitation at 2:00 pm and service at 3:00 pm. Joyce was my boss, but she was also a co-worker, friend, and advisor, who treated me (and everyone else) like family. She was the warmest, most sincere, most gracious, and friendliest, down to earth person I've ever known. I miss her more than words can say. Thank you Joyce.

I am so saddened to hear this news. She touched my life with her humor and compassion and her smile would light up a room. Her life was certainly a ray of sunshine in this world. Rest well, my friend, you will be missed. Condolences to all her family members, and special hello to Jane McGovern.

I liked her immediately and appreciated her intelligence and kind ways increasingly as I worked with her. She left a lasting impression on me.

I, along with many hundreds of other people, was able to attend the absolutely beautiful and incredibly moving memorial service for Joyce. There were moments of laughter, and many of tears. I'd only known Joyce for the last several years. But her best friends from childhood, her husband, her sisters, her nieces and nephews all told stories that touched me. There were people from all walks of life and from the many circles she traveled in. Her beauty and warmth touched so many lives. Joyce is part of us now and forever as we try to carry on her legacy of caring and compassion. Thank you Joyce.

I am saddened by the passing of M. Joyce Butler. My encounter with M. Joyce Butler was brief yet has stayed with me to this day. I was working briefly on a project in which I crossed paths with M. Butler. Miss Butler commented on my efforts. I do not recall verbatim her exact words and such is the magnitude of the impact it made on me. She was gracious. What I do remember is that what she said made me feel good about myself, and, so, she made me feel good about myself. As one who knew little of M. Butler and, yet, was so affected by her kind words and, in effect, her kind nature, I can only imagine the loss to her family and friends. My condolence to Miss Butler's family and friends.
Miss Butler, May You Rest In Peace.

I simply can not express the profound affect Joyce had on my life and continuing efforts to be a work in progress. Psychotherapist extraordinaire, my saving grace. She can never be replaced in my heart and mind. And thank you Joyce, for loving my dogs, and welcoming them (one at a time), into my therapy sessions.

Joyce was such a beautiful person, inside and out. A kindness just glowed from her and she has touched more lives than anyone of us could ever know. The world mourns her loss and my sympathies to her loved ones who knew her better than I.
