My dearest cousins. It doesn´t matter how long they live the loss of any parent is one of the most painful and difficult life experiences to live through. Joyce was special not only to her children but to me, to everyone. I know that nothing I say or do will take the pain of her leaving away from your hearts. I know that all of those memories you have of her will cause your hearts to ache and tears to come into your eyes. It is so difficult. But I also know this. With time those memories...

Dr. Crouse encouraged me to apply for an assistantship when I returned to EIU for grad school. I was shocked since I didn´t imagine I could qualify. She said, "We are looking for people just like you." Joyce Crouse changed the course of my life then, and continued to be a great influence on me and many other non-traditional students, especially. I am forever grateful to her.

Joyce was a great inspiration to me when I returned to Eastern to complete my master’s degree. She was one in a million! A wonderful mentor and friend.
