Joyce McDevitt Obituary
January 30, 1924 - December 17, 2023
Citrus Heights, California - Joyce Helene McDevitt, 99, a resident of Citrus Heights, CA, passed away on December 17, 2023. She was born on January 30, 1924 to Zada and Harold Shankland in Charles City, Iowa.
Joyce is preceded in death by her father, mother, and stepmother, Marie; brother Rupert Shankland, her spouses: Frank Koltun, William Dunfee, Vincent McDevitt, and Edward Kozel; daughter Peggy Champagne and grandsons David Champagne and Walker Kerns.
Joyce will be deeply missed by her sons, Bill McDevitt (Sandy) and Jim McDevitt (Sally), as well as her grandchildren: Barbara Niederhoff (Paul), Nicole Hester (Jim), Paul DeVol (Alesia), Robert DeVol (Michelle), Debi Crabtree, James McDevitt (Mary Anne), Cortney Marchetti (Michael), PJ McDevitt (Sarah), Molly Peterson (Ben), Mookie McDevitt (Katie), and John Kerns (Sydney); and 28 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Among those who will miss her are Marsha McDevitt, Terri & Joe Guidera, Jim & Sue Koltun, and her nephews Dean and Bob Shankland.
Joyce was a graduate of Good Council Catholic Academy and later pursued her passion for nursing at St. Mary's and Sierra College Nursing Schools. She was an LVN at Mercy San Juan Hospital, where she made a significant impact on the lives of her patients.
Joyce enjoyed playing cribbage and was known as a card shark in poker, blackjack, and hearts. She was a talented needleworker admired for beautiful knit and crochet items. Joyce was an inspiration with her Irish quick wit and charming personality. Her legacy will endure and inspire those she left behind. Her love for her family will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was truly a remarkable individual who touched many lives.
Joyce was a devout member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Citrus Heights.
We are extremely grateful to the staff of Atria Assisted Living, Rocklin, CA, Sutter Health Hospice Care, and especially her grandson, Robert DeVol, for the unselfish devotion to his grandmother's well-being.
Joyce will be buried with Vincent McDevitt at Golden Gate National Cemetery on January 30, 2024.
Because of the many family members that served, Joyce had a profound respect for the military. Donations in Joyce's memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.
