As a retired member of the Louisiana State Police and also a fellow member of our State Police Training Class of 1976 of which Joyce was a member, I am deeply saddened by the news of Joyce's passing. I remember her dedication and commitment to becoming one of the best and she did it becoming the first black female state trooper in Louisiana. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and all the Louisiana State troopers both active and retired.

What I will miss most about Joyce is the sharing of the same birthday. I will miss sharing the memories we made together at Northside High for a short period of time and visiting our cousin Kenneth Rice. However, the one that's very close to my heart is our trip to Africa to visit one of the places where I was doing missionary work. The laughter, the running through the airport, the dropping and picking up luggage falling down in the process, the excitement, the camaraderie.
