Jozef Senna Obituary

SENNA Col. Jozef Fred Senna, age 89, of St. Simons Island, died Friday, November 10, 2017 at Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick. Col. Senna was a native of Macon who enlisted for two years in the Navy prior to starting college at Georgia Tech, then later transferring to Mercer University. It is while in college that he met his future wife, DeRon Mac McCurdy, whom he proposed to at the end of the St. Simons Island pier while on vacation in 1949. Upon graduation from Mercer and their ROTC program, he was offered a Regular Army Commission and thus began his 30 year military career. This career included two tours of duty in Vietnam and other overseas assignments in Germany, London and Turkey. Col. Senna's specialties included Supply and Service Management Officer, Research and Development Coordinator and finally Inspector General for the Defense Logistics Agency at Cameron Station in Alexandria, Virginia. He had a decorated career and earned many medals including the Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal and the Bronze Star (1OLC). He would later go on to obtain his Masters from Ohio State and retired in 1982. Col. Senna and his wife loved traveling and cruising, and visited every continent at least once. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed playing with the Senior Men at Sea Island Golf course. He and Mac are members of First Baptist Church, St. Simons and attended St. Simons Community Church. Col. Senna will be remembered as a devoted family man who loved his family and his miniature poodle, Tessy. In addition to his wife he is survived by two children, Sher Senna Pollard (Mike) and Jozef F. Senna, Jr. (Shannon); two grandchildren, Jozef F. Senna, III (Alison) and Amber Senna and three great-granddaughters, Jocelyn, Isabelle and Savannah Senna. A service to celebrate Col. Senna's life will be held on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. Military honors and a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, Isles of Faith UMC in Jacksonville, FL or the charity of one's choice. Condolences may be expressed at www.edomillerandsons.com. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.
