Julian Portwood “JP” Minchew, 90, closed a chapter of his life on Friday, August 11, 2023 and opened a new one in Heaven, where he was welcomed by his daughter, Julie Annwyn, his parents, Julian Minchew and Addie Todd Minchew, as well as other members of his family and many friends.
JP, as he was known, is survived by his wife, Flo, of 62 years; daughter, Anne-Marie Sport and numerous nieces and nephews.
JP’s life may be remembered by his love for the Lord, his many friends, music ministry, military service and voluntary activities. He never said “No” to any opportunity to help someone.
First Baptist church offered opportunities for him to serve. He was honored to be elected as Deacon and later Deacon Emeritus. He served as Sunday School Director of Senior Adults, Chairman of Transportation Committee, sang with the Singing Seniors and Sanctuary Choir. He was known for singing “The Little Drummer Boy” at Christmas, especially at the Haven and the Veranda, where he led singing every Sunday night for their evening service.
Some of the places he volunteered were Ridgecrest Baptist Convention Center, hosting in the Georgia State Parks, Baptist Hospital, Disaster Relief, Navy Hospital and other places where there was a need. He and Flo were members of the Gofers, a Christian Camping Club, where he served as President and led singing most of the time.
Memorial Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until a Memorial Service begins at 11:00 am Saturday, August 19, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Pleitz Chapel with Dr. Dave Snyder officiating. Private family interment will be held at Bayview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First Baptist Church Missions, Music Ministry or your favorite charity.
The family would like to thank the staff of Life Care Center of Pensacola for their loving care and attention during his final days.
