Juan Irizarry

I met Johnny when I was researching the neighborhood for walking tours I give. I loved talking to him as each of us was born in and loved NYC and had many interesting stories to share. I last saw Johnny when he returned to the Dakota in September, and it broke my heart to learn of his passing in December.

My name is Sam. I grew up with Johnny on 135st. We went to grade school together. And we grew up in the crazy times in the 80's. We always had fun hanging out together. Johnny was always smiling and laughing and he always made everyone feel like a good friend which was special. Johnny was a beloved member of the Dakota family and one of the bravest people I´ve ever met. he created a home and a safe haven for everyone that lives here and came across his wonderful smile and indomitable spirit. May he rest in peace. He will never be forgotten.
