We met as post-docs at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh and were quickly friends. I had returned east from my dissertation work in southern Arizona/northern Mexico, she from multiple degrees from UCLA. She told me that she got to Pittsburgh by driving as much as she could on what was left of Route 66; not bad for her calling as historian. Judy was always my baby sister. Judy and the kids came up to Mt. Shasta where we lived. We celebrated her 50th birthday. As a special gift to her I had a diamond mounted on my mother's wedding band and presented it to her. We celebrated with a glass of wine, sitting on my deck looking up to Black Butte and Mt. Shasta.
