Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

A funeral service for Judith Evelyn (Ahmer) Schmidt, formerly of Arlington Heights, IL, and most recently of San Antonio, TX, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at Crown of Life Lutheran Church, located at 19291 Stone Oak Pkwy, San Antonio, TX 78258. A viewing will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church.

Judith was born on March 21, 1938, in Chicago, IL, to Edward James and Esther Hannah (nee Zersen) Ahmer. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at her residence, after a prolonged illness.

Judith was baptized on May 1, 1938, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mt. Prospect, IL, and later confirmed her faith on April 6, 1952, at Faith Lutheran Church in Arlington Heights, IL, where her family were founding members. She graduated as valedictorian from Arlington High School in 1956 and subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design from Washington University in St. Louis on a full scholarship.

While in St. Louis, MO, she met and married her husband, John, on June 7, 1964, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Maplewood, MO. Judith worked as a designer for Lenox before a period of travel and residence in Jerusalem, Cambridge, Baltimore, and New York City, eventually returning to Arlington Heights in 1977.

Throughout her life, Judith was an active and devoted member of the Lutheran Church. Upon returning to Arlington Heights, she and John joined St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she was involved with many numerous activities and organizations over the years. She was also actively involved with the Arlington Heights Historical Society, volunteering for many years at the Museum Country Store. Judith will be fondly remembered for her love of colors – particularly bright oranges, reds, and yellows – and her unique ability to blend modern and antique styles.

Judith is survived by her son, Mark and his wife, Morgan (nee Steele), of Floresville, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers James and Donald, and her beloved husband, John.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either Crown of Life Lutheran Church or Jesus Lutheran Church of the Deaf in Austin, TX.

Not sure what to say?

Sending our condolences to Judith's family and friends. In 2012 we moved into "Judith's house" as it is still known in our neighborhood; the home that she grew up in and also lived in later with her own family.

We will continue to treasure the memories Judith shared with us many years ago (such as her story of staining the staircase when she was in high school, and some mischief her brothers got into here).

A piece of her love of bright orange lives on in her longtime...

Judith was always a kind and gracious person to me and my family, and she will always be remembered in our hearts. Rest in peace.

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always.....Mo
