Judith Singer Vane, died Saturday, April 4, 2015, at her residence.
The relatives and friends of Judith S. Vane are invited to attend her Funeral Service at 4:00 PM, Monday, April 6, 2015, at Temple K.K.Beth Elohim, 90 Hasell St. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Vane was born in Chicago in 1928, to Mary and Julius Singer. The family moved to Charleston when she was 9, after her father's early death. Her mother went into the antiques business here with her brother, Herman Schindler, Mrs. Vane's uncle. Judith Singer and Jack Vane married in 1950 and offered those who met them a model for a happy marriage until Mr. Vane's death in 2011. Her mother, her uncle and her sister, Pessha, had died earlier.
Deeply involved in the theater, Mrs. Vane was a veteran of the Footlight Players (long resident in the Dock Street Theater) and an ardent supporter of the Spoleto Festival from the outset. For over 35 years she served as Spoleto's Hospitality Chair, Board Member and Board Member Emerita. She was an enthusiastic participant in countless community activities, from education to the arts, to enrichment programs for children, to support for families in need. She was awarded the Post and Courier's Jefferson Award for community service in 2006 in recognition of her work with Spoleto and the United Way's 211 Hotline.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jay Steven (Rachel) of Sullivans Island and Adam Nathan (Kathleen) of New York City, and her granddaughters, Sarah Reed Vane, Catherine Elizabeth Beaty and Sarah Grace Beaty of Sullivans Island. Her other survivors include her niece, Judith Mazo of Washington, DC and nephew, Mark Mazo of Chevy Chase, MD, and a multitude of devoted friends well beyond Charleston, Washington and New York, whom she counted as family and who loved her as one of their own. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Vane's memory to East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO) or the Spoleto Festival, Charleston.

Not sure what to say?

The Spoleto Festival and the City of Charleston will not be the same without this special lady. She will be sorely missed by all whose lives she touched with her ready laugh and her flair for life.

Those that we love are never lost. But the core of the best of what we are.

My deepest condolence to the Vane family. Her spirit will forever live within all of you. One Love & God bless!

She touched the hearts of many and I valued her wisdom.

Judith Vane was a wonderful, special lady, in every sense of the word. She had a presence that lights up a room - all the Vanes have that quality. She will be sorely missed.

Judy was so proud of her acting talents and I will remember the host of memorable characters she brought to life on the stage of the Dock St. Theatre.

From the time I met her many decades ago, Judy made an indelible impression as one of Charleston's Best.

It is hard to imagine Charleston and Spoleto without Judy. She has been a supportive and nurturing presence in big and small ways, but mostly deeply personal ways. Judy was a generous and faithful friend, and always quick to welcome newcomers and include them in her wide circle. We will miss her intelligence, her wit, her sincerity, and her smile. We love you, Judy.

When we moved to Charleston, 23 years ago I said to my husband Graham that when I grew up I wanted to be Judy Vane. She was an amazing woman. She was always positive and fun and had her finger on the pulse of our town. She opened her home to us and invited us to Thanksgivings and parties. Her mid-Spoleto parties were legendary. I learned to drink lemon-drops and sang with the cast of 2 operas at one such party, and I don't sing. She shared phone messages from Anthony Hopkins and her rabbi...
