MITCHELL, Julian Penn, affectionately known to his friends as "Junie Buck," age 78, died August 7, 2009 at his home after a short battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of his wife, Alice Griffen Mitchell, and the father of son, Julian P. Mitchell (Mitch) and wife, Brenda, and daughters, Joy Lake Mitchell and Sydnee Mitchell Mininno. He is also survived by brother, Robert W. (Bob) Mitchell and wife, Susan; sister, Maryann M. Bernier and husband, Louis, of Ashland; grandchildren, Shannon, Cody, Justin, and Noah; stepgrandchildren, Brandy and Chris; great-grandchildren, Allison and Alexander; stepgreat-grandchildren, Dylan and E.J.; and sisters-in-law, Jane and Barbara Mitchell, Sally Cramer, Barbara Lawson and Doris Boersig. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon B. and Emily Bowen Mitchell; brothers, George, Henry Dudley, Joseph B., and G. Donald; and a sister, Emily Bowen Mitchell. He was part owner and president of Mitchell Brothers Supermarket and owner of Mitchell's Catering. He was a lifelong member of Monumental United Methodist Church and also recently joined Grace Fellowship Church. Julian served on Emporia City Council and was past chief of the Emporia Volunteer Fire Department, the Emporia Chamber of Commerce and a member of Emporia Country Club. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 9, 2009 at Echols Funeral Home and services will be conducted on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 10 a.m. at Echols Funeral Home with Rev. Troy Greene and Pastor G.C. Hughes officiating. Pallbearers are nephews, Ricky, Edwin, and Charles Bernier, Mark, Craig, Chris, and Gary Mitchell, and friend, Mike Shearin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
