Award-Winning Artist

June Edith (Carlson) Spellman, 74, of Oak Knoll Drive, North Attleboro, died on Monday, January 16, 2006 at the Life Care Center of Attleboro where she had been a short-time resident. She was the wife of the late Albert Michael Spellman to whom she was married on January 4, 1958 and who died on December 18, 1992.

Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on September 26, 1931, she was a daughter of the late William and Elin (Johnson) Carlson. She was raised and educated in Attleboro where she was a 1949 graduate of Attleboro High School. She remained a resident of the City of Attleboro until moving to North Attleboro 17 years ago.

Mrs. Spellman was an artist who painted with watercolors and oils and was the recipient of numerous awards from the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the Providence Watercolor Club and at the Attleboro Museum Center for the Arts over the years.

She was the first place winner of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society’s national competition and often displayed her works at the Attleboro Museum Center for the Arts. Her painting of the Rhode Island State House won special recognition and was selected as one of five renditions to be hung in the Rhode Island State House.

A loving and dedicated homemaker, Mrs. Spellman was later employed by the former Attleboro Savings Bank as a customer service representative from 1980 – 1990.

As an accomplished artist, Mrs. Spellman was a member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the Providence Watercolor Club and was a supporter, member and exhibitor at the Attleboro Museum Center for the Arts.

She enjoyed cooking, especially dishes from her ancestral Sweden.

In addition to her artistic abilities, she was a gardener extraordinaire who treasured the time spent in her perennial garden at her home and was such a devoted sports enthusiast having cheered for the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics for so many years that she became the “family sports statistician”.

A woman of grace and elegance, she will be fondly remembered by her family and friends for her fabulous decorating abilities and her incredible sense of eclectic, sophisticated style.

She was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Attleboro where she had served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Mrs. Spellman leaves two daughters: Beth A. Hart of Warwick, Rhode Island and Karen L. Scanlan of North Attleboro; a son: Brian W. Spellman of Los Angeles, California; three grandchildren: Stephanie Hart of Hopkinton, Rhode Island; Andrew Scanlan of North Attleboro and Quinn Scanlan of North Attleboro; a brother: Richard Carlson of Rehoboth.

Not sure what to say?

My sincere condolences to the family of June. The gifts of her artistic talents, her kindness, and the many ways she gave of herself to others will be missed.

All of the Hill kids have special memories of June and growing up with the Spellman clan. I still have some little stones that June handpainted and gave to me as decorations on the wrapping of a birthday gift when I was 9 years old. June was a sweet, beautiful person who made the world better by being a part of it. She will be greatly missed.

Our families were intertwined for a significant number of years. There are so many fond memories that spring from that. Very often something comes up that triggers a reminiscense of those times. We guarantee that there is never an apple or blueberry pie that has passed a family vote of being better than June's. She will always be remembered and be in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Betty and Ray

Our thoughts remain with you and your family at this time. We are honored by the trust and confidence you have placed in us during this difficult time.
