At 16, a time when most teenagers' worries primarily involve homework, Kalief Browder was dealing with something far more traumatic: imprisonment on Rikers Island for a theft charge he vehemently denied. Though the charge eventually was dismissed, he endured three years in prison awaiting a trial that never took place. Roughly two of those years were spent in solitary confinement, and the time Browder spent among others was riddled with violence from guards as well as other inmates.
On June 6, 2015, two years after his release, he took his own life.
Those who knew Browder believe his suicide was driven by the trauma he endured in prison. Jennifer Gonnerman, a contributor to The New Yorker who'd previously written about Browder's ordeal, visited his family's home in the Bronx after hearing of his death. During the visit, his relatives reminisced about the young man they'd lost.
"One cousin recalled that when Browder first got home from jail, he would walk to G.E.D. prep class every day, almost an hour each way," Gonnerman wrote after the visit. "Another cousin remembered seeing him seated by the kitchen each morning with his schoolwork spread out before him."

I just watched the Netflix documentary about Kalief and am sickened, saddened and astounded. No child should have ever endured what Kalief endured. I hope he is resting in peace. He would have done amazing things with his life. With my heartfelt thoughts and condolences. , I hope his mother and family are living with some peace. Andrea from Washington state
