Building Bridges and Family
The idea of constructing things for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was so fundamental to Kalyan K. Sarkar, a 53-year-old civil engineer, he would have found the destruction of two skyscrapers unimaginable. "He is a man who spent his life building — bridges and tunnels and just about anything the Port Authority put up," said his son Kishan, who was looking forward to his father's birthday party two Saturdays from now.

The family finds some hope in the fact that Kalyan really knew buildings. He phoned his wife, Anarkali, from Tower 1 to explain that he and 12 of his co-workers were trapped on the 64th floor, the elevators were sealed, and they were headed to the stairs. Then he was cut off. Kishan, a computer programmer in New Jersey, is grateful that his father asked him to leave work early Monday night to come to their home in Westwood, N.J., to help his father with some Web site work. "I was lucky to be there," he said.

Not sure what to say?

18 years ago I was given Kalyan's name on a wristband to wear on my wrist as my family was leaving a county fair to remember to pray for him and his family. I was 11 at the time and I prayed every day for over a year for the peace and healing of his family, though at the time I was less aware of the impact of what this event really was. Every year on September 11th I find myself thinking about him and what kind of person he was and what his family must have gone through and how they are...

Thinking of you today and often. Never forgotten!

Kal,
Thinking of you. May you rest in peace.

In memory of us you will always be loved and may your soul rest in peace. Our prayers are always with you and family.

Rest in peace Kal. We remember you and all our TB&T family.

As I cross-stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

In memory....

I'm sorry I never had the chance of knowing such a wonderful man. While I never knew him I know for a fact that he was a man like no other. I know this because I know his son, Sujoy, and anyone that could give life to such a warm-hearted, kind person is by my terms, and everybody else's, a success. I wish the family much luck and love in overcoming such a tragedy, while I know that the luck isn't necessary because they have a tremendous amount of mental/emotional strength.

Dear Kal:

I have no words to express my sorrow. Everyday, you are in my dream. Sometimes, I could hear your voice. You will be always in our heart. I am sometimes speechless with shock! I still think you will come back to our home and be motivated to study all the time! I know your students are missing you. We are deeply saddend for you. We will always love you and keep you in our hearts.
