'She Was Really Tough'

Karen Elizabeth Hagerty threw a birthday party recently for her horse, Ricardo. A caterer brought a carrot cake in the shape of a horseshoe. There were 40 nonequine guests, and goody bags for every horse in the barn. "My sister loved her animals more than life," Deborah Anne Hagerty said yesterday. "She called them her kids."

Karen, 34, was a senior vice president for Aon Risk Services in the World Trade Center. She was loud and funny and inclined to take charge. When two of Deborah's friends called Karen to begin planning a bridal shower they were giving for Deborah, they found that Karen had already done it all.

Years ago, Deborah told Karen about a homeless shelter in the Bronx; Deborah was looking for people to buy presents for children who had written to Santa. "Give me the whole shelter," Karen said. Her office would overflow with donated toys.

"She just hounded everyone in her office," Deborah said. "She had to hire a moving truck last year because she had so much stuff. She told everybody, `I want you to buy something and it has to be good.' She was really tough: `Don't give me a scarf. Kids don't like scarves.' "

Not sure what to say?

I taught Karen riding on Ricardo. Had lunch with her at Piping Rock country club on Monday Sept 10th. Thinking about her today. Sorely missed !

Hi Karen, I do not know you but I came across your amazing life story on social media. I have been doing a lot of research on 9/11 and felt a connection to you. I am amazed at what a strong and beautiful person you were. Your story has touched my heart. Beautiful angel and light you brought to the world! I'm so sorry something so horrible happened to you. 9/11 should have never happened. I pray that you are now in eternal peace. Shine on beautiful angel!

Karen it´s me Joey you friend from wayne ct You are my first crush when we were little kids God bless you and may your soul rest in peace

Karen, i wanted to add this message on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Frank and i talk about you all of the time and remember those days fondly. You made a big impact on us here in New Orleans and you are well remembered. Thanks for being so full of life and sharing that with us. Your old boss, Larry.

Karen, I can’t believe that twenty years have gone by !
We think of you very often, and not just on this day in fact, you will never be defined by a date! Your spirit lives on in all of your friends’ hearts and minds.
I miss your sharp advice and your direct honesty, usually given over a meal at Le Charlot!, because I know that it came from deep love and thoughtfulness.
From time to time, we look at pictures of you at our wedding, just almost a year before you left us a smile...

I will never forget you Karen. My wife, Gail, and I watched you growing up when you were our neighbor on Dorothy La. in Kings Park, NY. You were the prettiest little doll and with a heart of gold. I think of you every 9/11. May you have eternal happiness in the arms of the Lord. Gail is gone now too! May, Lena, your mom, Aunt Debbie , Dad, Bill and family find solace.

I think about outrageous Karen every year on 9/11. We worked together in New Orleans, LA as paralegals in a law firm. I wanted to get a divorce, and Karen let me move into her apartment until I could find a place of my own. I remember she had a cute BMW with a throw pillow on the backseat. She was so proud of her older sister, who was doing some modeling. Karen had come to NOLA b/c she was dating a guy from Houma, but they broke up and she eventually went back to the Northeast. We all...

I, like so many people, remember September 11, 2001. Visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum brought back the emotions of that tragic day. I was with my mom that morning. She's also now in heaven.
I stood before your name at the Memorial and wondered about your life. Reading about you showed what a wonderful person you were during your short time on earth. There is no doubt you made this world a better place. My heart goes out to your family. You have not been forgotten.

Tribute to Karen . I met your mom flying out to NY to honor you at the 9/11 memorial for being such the angle of her life and eyes. I just found your picture your mom gave me and it brought a smile to my face :). I use to keep this in my work book for years. Really.. Karen still bring Smiles :) .... RIP DGD Heart - Thanks for sharing the Love
