Boating and Breakfast
Karl Smith liked all things active: he got his wife, Joanne, started on running, and when they were first dating, they took karate together.

Mr. Smith loved going to the beach and taking out his pontoon boat. And he loved his sons, Karl Jr., 19, and Bradford, 16.

Most mornings, Mr. Smith, 44, had to wake up early for the long commute from Little Silver, N.J., to his job as a municipal bond broker at Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Center.

But on weekends, he took on a different job: "He had this special thing, on weekends, when there would be a bunch of boys sleeping over," said his brother, Buddy Smith. "It might be 12 or 15 hungry young men from the swim team. Karl would make these breakfast menus and type them up, and pass them out the night before. Around election time, I remember, he had a dish on there called the W. In the morning, he'd get up early and make everyone what they wanted."

Not sure what to say?

Joanne, Karl and Bradford, I was just informed by our Marine Corps friends of Karls death. Through the years I have often thought about you guys. It was devastating to hear and I am sorry I am just finding out now. Karl was one of my best friends in the Corps. Kilo Company was a special group and Karl was one of primary reasons why. You all know how he impacted people with his smile. Good memories of our times on the beach at Emerald Isle and on our Unitas float to Central and South...

Joann, it's unbelievable that we are only now learning of Karl's death. Dick and I have talked of the two of you often through the years. Karl and my husband Dick worked and deployed together at 3/2 at Camp Lejeune. We are heartbroken for you and the family. We pray that your memories be warm and your future is blessed. Glenda Wallace

I will always remember Karl from my freshman algebra class with Mr. Kelso at New Trier West. Karl was always funny and so nice to me. He wrote something wonderful in my yearbook and I will never forget him. I went to Regina Dominican starting sophomore year and never saw him again. Sending prayers to his family and friends.

20 years ago today Karl was working on a municipal bond trade for my client on that faithful morning ... His memory has stayed with me and have prayed for him and his family that he so loved and adored

Every year, I pick a victim of September 11th attacks at random. I dedicate the day to their memory. This year, my finger fell upon Karl Trumbull Smith. Karl was a former marine and trader who probably knew my friend, Ed Graf, who also did not make it out of the Cantor Fitzgerald offices eleven years ago. My prayers and blessing go to his memory and family.
