Not sure what to say?

He always had a smile on his face and willingness to help. He was soft spoken with tenderness in his heart that was felt by all who entered the doors of Brookwood Elementary.

Karl I am so so sad that you are gone. I didn't know you and your wife Jean for very long but i really enjoyed being in your life the short time I was. I am thankful actually to be able to have met you both. I loved caring for you and the laughs we shared. I lived getting to know you and being your wife #2 ( you called me) at times. I love watching you amd Jean and how cute you both were with each other... Even after all the years. I envy what you guys had and hope my marriage is as long...

My heart is heavy for the loss of Mr. VanderLaan. I haven’t seen you since my parents anniversary party many years ago but have many fond memories with Steve and Jimmy. Mr. VanderLaan always had a smile on his face and enjoyed conversation. Your name comes up when we talk about the days we lived on Brookmark and went to you home by the Bonnie pool. The VanderLaan family was a special family and although as we have moved apart over the years all our memories are grand.
I am so...

There was so much more to Karl VanderLaan than I ever knew. I life guarded and taught swimming with Karl at the Racket pool and at the Godwin Physical Education building. He was always a lot of fun those summers I knew him. Rest In Peace my friend.

I was in his second 6th grade class at West Godwin (1957). I will always remember his enthusiasm, and discipline as a teacher. It was a thrill to see him at the Sept, 2014, Golden "G" luncheon after so many years.

I met Karl when he and Jean volunteered on the tram at Meijer Gardens. What a great person and friend he was! My condolences Jean.

Saddened to hear Mr. VanderLaan has passed to his eternal home. Happy that happens to be heaven.
Mr. VanderLaan was my sixth grade teacher and the first male teacher I had. At times of reflection I have thought of Mr. VanderLaan and what a positive influence he was on my life. So glad he was my teacher!

I was a Brookwood Bobcat from 1974-1980 and remember Mr VanderLaan fondly. Rest in peace Mr Vanderlaan.

Miss those days at the Godwin pool. Prayers and thoughts for the entire family.
