Karolyn Lee Van Osdel, 81, passed away October 2, 2025, at Avera Heart Hospital surrounded by those she loved.
Karolyn Van Osdel passed away October 2, 2025, at Avera Heart Hospital. Karolyn was born May 7, 1944. She was the second child of four to William and Lavona Mahan. Her family moved to Pickstown, SD for a short time before returning to Yankton. She attended Sacred Heart School for eight years. She attended and graduated from Mount Marty High School in 1962. After attending St. Mary's College in Omaha for one and a half years, she started work for the Yankton County Extension Office as a secretary. In 1966, she moved to Sioux City, IA. She lived with her aunt Marguerite and worked at Terra Chemicals until 1968.
She moved back to Yankton and worked as a secretary at Vocational Rehab at the State Hospital.
On April 16, 1970, she married Larry Van Osdel from Yankton at Sacred Heart Church. On November 21, 1971, their first son Jeffrey was born. In August 1973, they moved to Sioux Falls.
On March 30, 1977, their second son Patrick was born. In August 1983 they moved to Rapid City. In August 1993, they moved back to Sioux Falls. Karolyn worked as a secretary at Hauge & Associates until 2008. She adored and loved spending time with her four grandchildren.
Karolyn was preceded in death by her parents William and Lavona and her sister JoAnne, close Aunt Marguarite. She is survived by husband Larry, son Jeffrey (Amy) of Ellicott, MD, son Patrick (Bethany) of Lakeville, MN, grandchildren Hannah, Rachel, Keaton and Kendrick, and siblings Jim Mahan and Trinka Mahan.
Karolyn's funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at St Katharine Drexel Catholic Church with fellowship to follow.
