Katherine Susan Hattier, age 39, was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 by our heavenly Father and her grandparents, Norris Hattier and Rich and June Richard. We’re only jealous that they will be the first to hear her speak and watch her dance.
Katie was born on May 13, 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is survived by her adoring parents, Eddie and Sue Hattier, her two devoted sisters, Megan Binder (Jeff) and Anna Douglass (Will), her niece, June Binder, nephew, Harrison Binder, grandfather, Edwin Hattier Sr., numerous aunts and uncles, and generations of loving cousins.
Katie had many experiences that most of us would only dream of. Her travels have taken her everywhere from Disney World to the Statue of Liberty and the Rockies mountaintops. She had many fun-filled memories of swimming, bike riding, camping, horseback riding, singing along at church, dancing with her sisters in the kitchen, and even toboggan sledding down a black diamond in Colorado. Katie always loved an adventure. She also had a creative side. Katie was a master at everything from crafting handmade birthday cards to putting on plays with her Girl Scout troop. She was thrilled the year she was awarded the winning t-shirt design for Girl Scout summer camp. More recently, she enjoyed cruising around town, strolling around the block on sunny days, shopping the sale racks, and watching music videos with her Mama.
Katie’s days, though, were not met without challenge. As a young girl, she attended a rigorous learning and development program for three years. Her hard work payed off in her learning to crawl, eat, count, and read. Katie’s also one of few who has seen the inside of a hyperbaric chamber – a burgeoning technology for her time. She’s been the VIP guest at numerous hospitals and won over the hearts of countless nurses.
Despite these obstacles, Katie wore a beautiful smile whenever she could. She had a tenacity to live and fought to the very end. Katie left a legacy that we all must continue to carry on – Face each day with an unwavering strength and a deep love for others. Katie was a prayer warrior for countless people doing what she could to help ease their pain, all while enduring much suffering herself. Many have benefited from her selfless mission.
We will forever be changed by the lasting impression Katie left on our lives. We are blessed to have witnessed such a beautiful, kind soul. God used Katie in so many ways to brighten His kingdom on Earth. She was so easy to love. We are eager for the day when we will be together again.
We are forever grateful to all of those who have helped Katie along the way: the dozens of volunteers who assisted with her intensive therapy, all of her special education teachers, many therapists, doctors, nurses, camp counselors, fellow parishioners at St. John of the Cross for the past 33 years, anyone who has ever said a prayer in Katie’s name, and her doting caregivers who have become her dearest friends and will forever be a part of our family.
“Those who walked closest to Christ were those who had to bear the greatest trials.” – St. Faustina
