Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory - Ballwin Obituary

Rose, Kathleen H. (nee Haldiman), passed away, Sunday, December 17, 2023.

Beloved wife of William A. Rose.  Dear mother of Kristin (Alec Bolten) Rose and John (Julia) Rose.  Loving grandmother of Isla, Thomas and Nora.  Dear daughter of Dorothy and the late John Haldiman.  Sister of Kaye (Tom  Torack) Haldiman and Valerie (Jeff Puryear) Haldiman.  Our dear sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend.

From the time Kathleen entered school she always knew she wanted to be a teacher. She got an early start playing school with her sisters, cousins, friends and anyone she could get to sit at a desk. She fulfilled her teaching ambitions beginning at Fort Zumwalt, then teaching GED classes at night while her children were little, and finally finishing her career at Bellerive Elementary. She loved teaching first graders because every day they learned something new, and she had a funny story to tell at the end of the day.

Kathleen was a woman who never sat still. She enjoyed sewing and was making her own clothes by the time she was 12. In later years she was part of a sewing group and made beautiful table runners for every holiday (she always made four of everything to share with her mother and sisters). She loved antiques, garage sales (always managing to find a car full of bargains), making cards for all occasions (the Checkered Cottage was her "happy place"), baking cookies, gardening and maintaining a beautiful yard, making Christmas gifts and decorating her screened in porch where she and Bill loved to sit.

On Eaglebrooke Court, her home for over 38 years, she was known as the "cookie lady" because she made iced sugar cookies for holidays and delivered platefuls to the neighbors. But she was also known as "King Louie's Mom." When Louie (a goldendoodle bigger than Kathleen) came to live with Kathleen and Bill it changed their lives. Kathleen was trained by Louie to take several walks a day and became friends with every other dog owner in the neighborhood.

It is not a story of Kathleen without mentioning her family of four to which she was a devoted spouse and mother. When Bill first showed up to take Kathleen out on his motorcycle she surprised everyone when she actually took off on the back of the motorcycle. That was the beginning of her life with Bill (although the motorcycle did not last long). The birth of Kristin and then John completed the family. And later when the family grew with Julia and the birth of her grandchildren, Isla, Thomas and Nora, Kathleen could not have been happier. She was so hoping to make it to Kristin and Alec's wedding in February.

Thank you to all the family and friends that helped out over the past year, her family is forever grateful.

Not sure what to say?

I was so sad to hear of Kathleen’s passing. I just recently met her when she was walking with Louie. She was fun, caring, loving & interesting. I wish I had met her sooner as I didn’t realize we had so many interests in common. What a wonderful woman you had as a wife, mother & grandmother. She will be missed in the neighborhood.

I lived next door to Dorothy and John Haldiman on Brownell. My family, Marie and Bob Boedeker were dear friends. I just learned of Dorothy's passing and was shocked to hear about Kathleen. A most wonderful family you couldn't imagine. My deepest sympathy to all family members.

I met Kathleen and her mom Dorothy on the Saturday morning junkin circuit. Always a smile on her face and her arms full of treasures. It was always a treat to run into her and discuss what sales we’d all already been to and where we absolutely had to go.

Kathleen and Dorothy will be missed by the Saturday morning junkers❤

We lived next to the Rose family for over 25 years. It was a great friendship as we watched our kids grow up together. I looked forward to talking to Kathy on the weekends when we each worked in the yard. She was so very proud of her family and her home. She was always upbeat, smiling and laughing--a real joy to be around. When we moved I missed our time together. I am so sad for her family's loss.

I am so sorry for the immeasurable loss of Kathleen from your family. I had the privilege of knowing Kathy when my family and I lived down the street from her on Eaglebrooke Ct. She became a good friend because I loved her kind, genuine, affable spirit. Even after we moved, we occasionally kept in touch, and I always considered her such a dear friend. You have my hearfelt sympathy for the passing of this wonderful person, and my memories of Kathy will always linger in my heart. ...

I met Kathleen and Louie while I was walking my dog, Truffles. We enjoyed visiting with Kathleen and Louie. We formed a friendship along with our dogs. We shared neighborhood news and family stories. We exchanged Christmas cookies and fruitcake. Kathleen, Truffles and I miss you so much--thinking of you and Louie walking past our house.

I spent several years with Kathleen while working at Bellerive School for Special School District. She was so kind and quick to laugh. She gave me a block calendar that I admired and I think of her every day when I change the date. I was so sad to hear of her passing. I loved working with her in her classroom.

I had the pleasure getting to know Kathy during John’s elementary years. We became fast friends as we endured the many sports teams the boys played together. I am so glad to have those memorable years with Kathy and have the opportunity to call her my friend. She will be missed by many!
