Not sure what to say?

I have followed the career of multiple Emmy award winning actress Jean Smart for many, many years. Tonight, she won another Emmy award, as Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for "Hacks". It saddened me her husband Richard passed just 6 months ago, but I know his spirit was there. It caused me to think - I wonder if Jean's parents are alive to share in this evening. That's when I discovered her obituary here. I must say, she had to have been an amazing woman after reading the comments posted...

I just lost my husband and would love to be able to cry on my moms ( Kay Smart) shoulder. She was a remarkable lady! - Jean Smart Gilliland

Auntie Kay was at the very top of my favorite-relative list. We saw her when we were in town, for a book chat and sometimes a trip to Value Village (for more reading material). Then home for tea. She was a thoughtful, engaging woman with an interesting early life. Auntie Dorothy once wondered what it must have been like to be dropped into the large Smart family with all those active, not-quite-noisy sisters.

We will miss our visits with her.

My mom, Joy Stricker (née Robertson) and her sister Fran, called her Katie. They were all great friends in their youth and as young married folks and kept that friendship through the years, even though they would go years without touching base. My mom said they had such fun together and always what a great gal Katie was. My mom had taken the train up to visit her sometime in the 10 years or so Of her life. When my mom died in May of 2009, I decided to call Katie and let her know. I'd never...

My early recollections of Kay are as her being a second mom. My dad was a baker so worked nights & slept days. I lived across the street & spent my childhood as a best bud of Jean so knew the family, well enough to have a knickname (Bubs) from Doug Sr, Kay allowed us an interesting childhood, the Guiney pigs in the basement. The dress up clothes in the attic which we used for our plays that we put on in the neighborhood, making wreaths from pine swags in her basement, dancing to Scottish...

Kay was an amazing person with a kind heart and a very creative spirit. I love the fact that Kay would want us all to do a good deed and "pay it forward". I totally agree with that, and may her kindness live on in that way. Sending much love to everyone in the Smart family.
Love, Ellen Jareckie

My deepest sympathy in the loss of your mother and grandmother, Kay. I have such fond memories of her remarkable daughters, Georgia and Jean from our Ballard High School days in the late 60's. I read about her passing in the Sunday Time's paper and wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. What a special tribute to her!

Dear Smart family,
Thank you for sharing Kay's obituary via Ellen. Grace has many fond memories of Kay, Doug, and the family particularly in the 1960s. We come across photos of Kay in our photo album, and just like this one the same open, friendly and engaging expression. Kay will be remembered by us for her warmth and integrity. Our thoughts are with you. And YES, we all vote Democratic.
All our best, Ann and Grace

Didn't know Kathleen but I thought the obituary write up was wonderful, for an obviously wonderful woman. I wish the best for her loved ones.
