Not sure what to say?

Katie, I thought of you today and how much fun we had as kids in our neighborhood in Elizabeth City. We explored the swamp behind my house a hundred times. You were brave, creative, and a dear friend.

I had the distinct honor of serving in mission with Katie as a member of Voices of Youth in Mexico and Mississippi in 2001 and 2002. Never will I forget her beautiful voice, her infectious energy, and her love for life. I remember taking goofy pictures of her and Emily Perkins on the pyramids of Tula, Mexico, her posing in the airport with official Voices of Youth apple, and her beatnik interpretation of "Jesus Loves Me" in Mississippi. These are just a few of the things by which we remember...

Dear Debbie and family, Dr. Sours shared the sad news of your loss of Katie when my husband Jim was in for a check-up on 6-14-04. We are so sorry for your loss. We want you to know that we are keeping you and your family and her friends in prayer. God Bless you and Keep you,
Coral Rose and Jim Shipley

Katie,
I taught you and your sister physical education at Northside Elementary School in Elizabeth City,N.C. You were a teacher's dream! So sweet and totally determined to give it your all in whatever you did. You ran with such grace and was such a wonderful role model of kindness to all. I was saddened when you moved away and even more so today! You will always be missed.

I was blessed to meet Katie on Voices of Youth in 2002. Her strong faith, wonderful smile, and her beautiful voice was displayed to the entire group as well as to other people. I feel truly blessed to have been able to meet someone like her. My deepest sympathy is with Katie's family. I know she will be missed by all who knew her. The Southard family is in my prayers. God Bless.

Katie studied voice with me at Dance Etc. What a joy she was to work with. I was thrilled to discover that her talents went beyond music. She was an absolutely delightful young woman and I am extremely saddened about her death. It's a sad day for us here on earth, yet there is a celebration in heaven. I wish God's comfort and peace for all those who knew and loved Katie. My heart goes out to her family. God Bless You!

You truly were an angel here on earth as you will be in heaven. Even though we didn't speak much after I left marching band and graduated in 2000 you still remained in my heart as a truly special and genuine person. You will be deeply missed.
