T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home - Suffolk Obituary

Kathy Yvette Bynum was born on August 17, 1958, to Hester A. Knight and the late Willie Rawlings in Nansemond County, VA. She departed this life on Friday, February 18, 2022, at Sentara Obici Hospital. She was preceded in death by her brother, Herbert L. Thompson and Stepfather, James R. Knight.

Kathy was a 1977 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School. She pursued her higher education studies at Norfolk State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work in 1983. After graduating, Kathy held various positions in the insurance and social work field including Director of Social Services for Consolute Heath Care of Windsor, VA; Administrator of Governors Inn Estate Assisted Living Facility, Newport News, VA. Upon retiring, Kathy worked as the Director of Social Services for Golden Living Center, Portsmouth, VA.

As a young adult, Kathy joined New Mt. Joy Food for Living Ministries under the leadership of Bishop W.P. Wiggins, Sr. Kathy had a love for God and was passionate about using her spiritual gift of singing. She was the President of the Nurses Board and a member of the Voices of Inspiration Choir. She enjoyed participating in the Drama Guild and Youth Department activities. In her later years, Kathy joined with St. Paul’s RZUA Church under the leadership of Bishop Edward Foreman.

Kathy loved music, playing games, and telling a good joke. She was a natural-born leader with a quick wit and unmatched sense of humor. She enjoyed entertaining and spending time with her family and friends. Kathy never met a stranger. She was loved and will be missed by many.

Kathy’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her beloved family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband, Ricky Bynum, her mother, Hester A. Knight; one son, Vernord J. Bynum; two stepchildren, Ricky Smith and Bridget Boone; two nieces, Shakina Teel and Janae Thompson; special aunt, Annie Wiggins; four uncles, a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
