Staying in Touch, Always

Everywhere Kelly Ann Booms lived, she made good friends, which is what you would expect of a lively, outgoing girl, the oldest in a family of four children. But throughout her childhood, she also made a point of staying in touch as she moved from Colorado to Michigan, Australia to Ohio, where her family still lives outside Cincinnati.

"She was very strong willed," said her father, Robert Booms Sr. "It was her strong personality that really made her keep up with her friends."

Ms. Booms got her first real job in Boston, working for PriceWaterhouse in 1999, soon after graduating from Miami University in Ohio with a double major in accounting and finance. Last summer she was notified that she had passed certified public accountant exams. On Sept. 11, she boarded American Airlines Flight 11 for California, where she had been sent on temporary assignment. She was 24 years old.

In Boston, as elsewhere, she had become involved in charity work, helping out underprivileged families at Christmastime. She also loved sports, and had recently taken up the guitar. "She was very ambitious, very outgoing," her father said. "When she was in a room, you knew she was there. She influenced a lot of people in a lot of ways."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on November 29, 2001.

More than 700 people attended the weekend memorial service for Kelly Ann Booms in her parents' hometown of Blue Ash, Ohio. After the packed service, tables, chairs, and food--many gifts of food--appeared at the Booms' home. Hundreds of people followed.

"We were overwhelmed. There were people I didn't even know who were there," said Richard L. Booms Sr., Kelly Ann's father. "It's just amazing what people are doing for us. You don't even ask--things you don't even think of--they're just done."

Booms, a 24-year-old employee of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston, was aboard American Airlines Flight 11, bound for California on a four-week assignment in Long Beach..

As the community rallied around the Booms family into the evening, friends from Kelly Ann's childhood in Michigan and high school years in Australia remembered her as vivacious, strong-willed and caring.

At her parents' home, the procession of well-wishers didn't end until after midnight.

Not sure what to say?

I woke up this morning on the 24th anniversary of that horrible morning/day/week/month/year thinking about Kelly. We were colleagues at PwC Boston and very different people. Kelly was the motherly, focused, wicked smart, tolerant superstar in our advanced group. I was the juvenile, distracted, punching above my brain loafer. Kelly always told me to study for the exam, or finish today what was due tomorrow, etc. Simply put, she was awesome. And I only knew her for a little over a year. ...

This tragic anniversary does not pass without a recurring sadness and prayers for Kelly, Tom, and the Booms family. I didn´t know Kelly well but I remember her having her mother´s vibrancy and her father´s intensity. She was one of those people you would bet on in life. Such a tragic loss. Our continued prayers to Rick, Nancy, and family. Joe & Brianne Fox

Kelly Ann I cannot believe it has been 20 years since you and nearly 3,000 other American lives perished on that fateful September day but in-spite of that I never stop thinking about you and my personal-memories of those terrorist attacks as such are still fresh as ever in my mind.

But we know now of course that you are ultimately even more alive now than you ever we're on this puny planet Earth. We know that not by sight but by faith of course.

Rest In Peace Kelly Ann...

Kelly was a beautiful, wonderful girl, who I met through a friend of her Mom. Nancy and Richard, know that Kelly is not forgotten. Wishing you God's blessing and comfort for you family.

Kelly Ann, I never met you but your story has been a part of all of our lives now for 20 years, and will be forever. To us you are no stranger. God bless you.

Remembering Kelly on the 20th anniversary of 9/11....

To the Booms family,

It's my first time posting on this wall. I'm so glad I came across it.

I worked with Kelly at PricewaterhouseCoopers. While we weren't paired together on many projects, I remember that we worked on one project together that was quite tough. We were cramped in a conference room in the Boston office, with many other colleagues, cranking out financial statements for one of the largest clients. Some days were frustrating; our work subjected to intense...
