BURKHART, KENNETH (KEN), age 89, of Knoxville, passed away 2:45 p.m. Wednesday December 29, 2004.

Mr. Burkhart was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, and a National League Baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals, playing in the 1946 World Series. He was Also a National League Umpire for 17 years, and retired in 1973. Mr. Burkhart was a member of the Knoxville and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Ward Burkhart.

Survivors: Daughters and Sons-in-law, Janet and Conrad Mershon of Georgia, Karen and Don Layton of Florida, Linda Burkhart-Jordan and husband Mark of Georgia, and Daughter, Gayle Burkhart of Florida; Son and Daughter-in-law, William and Shirley Burkhart of Kansas; special friend, Eula Tassey of Knoxville.

Funeral services will be 8:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Mortuary Chapel with Ms. Deborah Chew officiating. The family and friends will meet at Stevens Mortuary at 1:15 p.m. Sunday and go in procession to Woodlawn Cemetery for graveside services and interment at 2:00 p.m. Pallbearers: Jerry Tilson, Chuck Cavalaris, Ed Lawson, John Chew, Leonard Robbins, and George Lott.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood Avenue at Broadway.

I was saddened to hear of Uncle Ken's death. I remember happy times as a youngster playing at his house with Janet and Karen and the Eippert boys. I saw him about 6 years ago when my father was ill and in the hospital in Jefferson City. I send my prayers and concern to family and friends.

I would love to hear from my cousins and am including my email address for possible contact. We are in Florida for winter months and spend the rest at of the year at Rt. 1, Box 1164, Golden,...

There is a void in my heart at the passing of Ken Burkhart. He was a very special friend, kind hearted, and sharing. He will be greatly missed.
