Kenneth E. Hunt Jr. made an impression with fellow Marines because he led by example. Instead of just ordering young Marines to do push-ups, he would get up front and do them, too. "What I'll remember most is the way those young Marines looked up to him," said Lt. Col. Mark Butler, his commanding officer. "As Marines, we talk a lot about leading, and he was a living embodiment of what we mean." Hunt, 40, of Tucson, Ariz., died Oct. 12 from injuries from a July 24 explosion in Taqaddum. He was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. Hunt joined the Marines in 1983 and served in bases around the country and the world, including Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong and Hawaii. During his 22-year career, he received more than 30 medals and ribbons, including a Purple Heart for the July 24 incident. "He was a wonderful person, the best father, the best son," said his mother, Juanita Hunt. "He was a good husband. He loved his wife. He loved his kids. He was a Marine, father and husband." He is survived by his wife, Maria; son, 19-year-old Kenneth E. Hunt III; and daughter, 13-year-old Kimberly.
