Not sure what to say?

Ken and Winnie Hawkes were my neighbors when I was growing up. They were the grandparents that I longed for. They, and their dog, Guestie, gave me much happiness in my troubled youth. Ken and Winnie allowed me to ride and care for their old Standardbred horse, Belle. Every girl should have a horse growing up. Ken didnt ride her much at the time, but they allowed me to ride her through Bridal Trails whenever I wanted. I taught the former harness racer to gallop, took care of her when they left...

I have been a friend to John Christenson, Ken's grandson, for nearly 25 years and over those year's I had the pleasure of getting to know Ken and his family. My family is saddened by Ken's passing but we celebrate his spirit and love of life which will carry on his legacy for many generations.

It has been such a pleasure and privilege to have lived on the other side of the fence that separated our backyard from Ken and Winnie's--for the past 35 years. Ken was always gracious and shared stories of his rich, full life with us. Over the years we have observed many joyful family gatherings at their home-the happy sounds of children and adults blending together was music to our ears. We shall always cherish these wonderful memories and think of them each time we look across the back...

May the fond memories of your "Gramps" help you through these sad times. My thoughts are with you.

Margaret Chilibeck, Sidney, B.C.

Our deepest condolences go to Ken’s family. We have known Ken for the last thirty plus years meeting him shortly after purchasing our property on Union Hill. He continued to visit his property next to ours over the years chatting about how things use to be, telling us about his adventures in Hawaii, and talking about his family (telling some funny tales at times that only Ken could tell). We were saddened to hear when Winnie died in January 2008 and then his son, Larry’s passing in June...

Having known and worked with Sara for over ten years,I am saddened to hear of her grandpa's passing. I know how much he brought to her life - and how much she brought to his. Their relationship was a touchstone to many of us in a busy world. My heart is with you all.

Wow!

May God be with you as a family at the passing of this wonderful man. We have so many wonderful memories of Kenneth Hawkes.
