A Devout Baseball Fan
Kenny Marino was a Mets fan and a Seattle Mariners fan, but his all- time favorite ballplayer was Ken Griffey Jr.
So Katrina Marino, his wife, e-mailed the Cincinnati Reds wondering if Griffey could hit a home run for her husband because he would be "looking down with a big grin."
On Sept. 25, Griffey, in his second at-bat against Philadelphia, obliged Mrs. Marino. He said it would always stand out as one of the most memorable he had hit.
The bat was later given to Mrs. Marino and her two children, Kristin, 3, and Tyler, 1.
Firefighter Marino, 40, was with Rescue 1 in Manhattan. His family happened to visit him at the firehouse the morning of Sept. 11, shortly before the summons to the trade center. Firefighter Marino whispered into Kristin's ear, "If you are a good girl, when I get home I will get you a prize ‹ a Wizard of Oz prize."
A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Marino found the prizes, a Dorothy doll for Kristin and a Scarecrow for Tyler.
And there was a Fireman Santa Claus ornament for Mrs. Marino.
She mentioned those treasured final prizes at the memorial service for him on Long Island. As Rescue 1 led the mourners out, the organist played "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."
The members of Rescue 1 had to smile. They knew that was so Kenny.

REST IN POWER KING!! I saw your daughter on snap honoring your memory and came to this page to learn a lil more about you from your friends and families comments. As someone who was just a kid during the time of your passing, I've used these years to learn about the heros that helped saved so many lives that day. I will keep your memory alive by mentioning your name when I talk to my students, especially when bravery and hero's are brought up.
God Bless You and your family Mrs....

09/07/2024 - This morning, I participated in Baltimore City’s 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, and each participant received a clip-on badge with a picture of a firefighter who lost their life that day; Kenneth was on mine. I am proud to have walked those 2200 steps and to honor and carry on Kenneth’s great legacy!

It's 7/13/23 and I'm sitting on a bench in a memorial gazebo near the Mill Ponds in Monroe, NY. Kenny's name is listed as one of the beautiful souls lost on that horrible Tuesday morning. I had to look up his name and read his story. My condolences to his family. We shall NEVER forget.

It has been a couple days since 9/11. I am 15 years old and I go to Mount Vernon High School in Indiana. I just came across this memorial page, and I have read every single message since 2001. To his kids, from kid to kid, I want to say you're never alone. Your father is watching over you, and I know he loves and miss you with all his heart. My prayers go out to your family.

There's nothing I can add that hasn't already been repeated multiple times. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. Thank you to your family for their sacrifice - along with multiple prayers always. So sorry for the grief that 9/11 brought to everyone affected. I believe 9/11 should stand as a National Holiday of Remembrance.

Every year as September 11 approaches, I think of Kenneth and his family. I had the honor of wearing his badge while doing 110 flights of stairs at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. I will be sharing his legacy today with some 4th grade students in Wisconsin. Never Forgotten.
